Assistant Hatchery Manager (Port Alberni, BC)


We are currently looking to fill the permanent, full-time role of Assistant Hatchery Manager for our Freshwater Department based out of our Boot Lagoon Hatchery in Port Alberni, BC.

Application Requirements:


  • Diploma or Degree related to Aquaculture, Biology, Aquatic Resources, Fisheries Resources Management or similar preferred. Work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 4 years of hatchery aquaculture experience, particularly working with the RAS systems
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in aquaculture site management role
  • Great interpersonal and communication skills. Good critical thinking and decisionmaking ability combined with sound judgement.

Position Details:


  • Supports the hatchery manager in providing leadership and direction to the hatchery team from egg take to smolt transport offsite to ensure that production remains on budget within targets.
  • Helps plan and schedule hatchery activities. Coordinates and directs employees to deliver production goals.
  • Adheres to company policies, SOPs, and industry regulations to ensure that best husbandry practices are always followed.
  • Promotes and maintains health and safety standards to foster a safe work environment.
  • Collaborates with the Freshwater Operations department and the Fish Health department to ensure an ongoing monitoring and preventative approach to hatchery systems and fish health programs.
  • Ensures that all records are kept up to date and accurate.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • This fulltime position operates on 5 days on 2 days off schedule (not campbased) working 40 hours per week. May be required to work weekends/holidays and afterhour shifts.
  • Eligible for benefits upon hire including extended health, dental, and vision care, AD&D insurance; life and dependent insurance, and longterm disability insurance. RRSP matching available after 3month probation completed. Vacation pay is accrued at a rate of 6% (3 weeks) per year.
