Sumera is looking for a highly caring, qualified, and energetic contract/seasonal instructor to support its women's programs in West Toronto.


A note from Sumera, "we are not a gym, community center, or dance studio. We are a community-based organization that has been offering programs across 3 Bloor centers since 2014. We place emphasis on running free physical activities for youth living in at-risk communities across Toronto. Our class sizes range anywhere from 4 to 15 maximum. Job duties and responsibilities

  • To instruct a 50minute fun, safe, and effective class for all levels and abilities with confidence inperson
  • Has experience instructing an 8week Belly Dance curriculum for beginners and those with no dance experience
  • Understands the components of a dance class (warmup, dance step teaching, an easy to follow routine, practice time and a cooldown)
  • Familiar with Middle Eastern, and African rhythms and dance movements
  • Shows up 10 minutes before class to set up and greet participants, and ends on time to pack up, arrange the room, and greet participants off before other classes start (time management and arriving early is necessary)
  • Agrees to wear a visor shield and/or mask before, during, and after inperson classes to protect yourself and class participants
  • Can keep and bring our portable speaker to our class (provided to instructors during the term only)
  • Ensures clients understand RPE (rate of perceived exertion) to reduce fatigue and injuries
  • Able to teach a class in the interest of the group participants (modifying movements for beginners and women with no dance or fitness experience)
  • Can cue effectively using a range of indications (visual, hands, audio)
  • Willing to instruct a small class for older women (maximum 15)
  • Shows compassion for those recovering from chronic health conditions
  • Brings music on their own device and any aux cords
  • Able to lift up to 15 lb and arrange the room (stack tables/chairs and set aside for space)
  • Teaches assigned classes on time and ends on time, unless a delay occurs
  • Keys provided for some centers and these must be brought to every class
  • Open to receiving regular feedback and discussing issues/concerns inperson/phone
  • Able to communicate all issues and concerns well and in a timely manner by phone and text (including being late, class cancellations, and participants issues, injuries)
  • Shows professionalism at all times (including conversations and workout attire) and upholds the organizer's code of ethics
  • Agrees not to promote themselves, their classes/services or other companies in class
  • Able to instruct in a community setting (not a traditional gym/dance studio)

Qualifications:


  • Is a current Egyptian/Belly Dance instructor in Toronto
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience instructing inperson Belly Dance / Egyptian Folklore
  • Must have a valid CPR Level C and First Aid certificate
  • Has valid personal liability insurance (for workplace accidents and risks)
  • Experience in working with women over 45 years old
  • Has experience or a desire to instruct classes for women in a community/nonprofit setting. We do not encourage competitive or judgemental environments.
  • Has instructed online on Zoom during COVID1
  • Canadian / North American certifications in art and movement therapy, personal training, group fitness instruction, health and fitness promotion is an asset
  • Agrees to wear a mask or visor during dance/fitness classes that are inperson if required too

The Interview Process has 3 steps:

  • Agrees to an initial Zoom interview to discuss the position and qualifications. To save time, Sumera will call applicants to discuss their qualifications and availability first before setting up their first zoom interview.
    The applicant will be invited to attend at least 2 of our women's dance and fitness classes online or in person to see our program structure, clientele, and prepare for their mock up class.
  • If selected, is able to provide 2 relevant work references, copies of their certifications, government ID and a valid CPR certificate, the signing of a contract outlining the terms and conditions.

Honorariums
(this is a seasonal contract volunteer position that has a monthly honorarium issued at the end of the month for their generous time and efforts)


$35 to $40 per class based on the following qualifications and experience: 5+ years of Belly Dance/Egyptian Folkore dance instruction, 10+ years of formal Belly Dance/Egyptian Folklore dance training, 1 relevant dance certification, CPR level C and first aid training and personal liability insurance. Those who have certifications/diplomas in Art, Movement, and Health and Fitness will be offered the highest honorarium.
