Introduction The Student Support Worker primarily works with African Nova Scotian students to support a positive school experience, and improve academic success and self-esteem.
The Student Support Worker works in a collaborative environment with education stakeholders and develops effective communication links between African Nova Scotian learners, their families, the Community and the school.
The Student Support Worker acts as a positive role model and fosters a positive environment of good will, respect and dignity with African Nova Scotian students.
Minimum Requirements - Post-secondary education in Human Services, Social Services or related field- An equivalent combination of education/experience may be considered in lieu of a diploma/degree program
- Experience working with youth of African Nova Scotian decent
- Being a person of African Nova Scotian descent.
- A valid Nova Scotia's driver's license and or access to an insured vehicle.
- Authentic connections to African Nova Scotian culture and traditions
- Authentic connections to African Nova Scotian community
- Ability to connect and build relationships with students
- Knowledge of the current and historic experiences of African Nova Scotian communities in the public education system
- Knowledge of the issues and concerns facing African Nova Scotian youth
- Knowledge of the services available to African Nova Scotian learners;
- Commitment to ongoing professional learning
- Ability to work as a collaborative team member
- Ability to work independently with mínimal supervision
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders including: students, parents, school staff, community members and external groups
- Ability to utilize current technologies
- Ability to maintain accurate records and write reports
- The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality
