Your opportunity:


Under the general direction of the Manager, Chem-Labs Technical Support and Supplies, and working closely with the Associate Chair of the Undergraduate Program, the incumbent provides technical services for undergraduate labs, including but not limited to designing and implementing new lab experiments for undergraduate courses, preparing solutions and the stocking of chemicals, assisting in administrative duties of undergraduate courses, answering technical question, calibrating and conducting preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment, assisting in the selection of new equipment, and assisting in the operation of the Chemistry Stores facility.


Since handling and working with hazardous materials (chemicals and biological samples) is a large component of this job, the incumbent must must have demonstrated knowledge of spillresponse, hazardous waste management, SDSs, PPE, and must observe all health and safety practices during the normal course of the work.

In addition, the incumbent must report equipment malfunctions, Infrastructure deficiencies, unusual occurrences, and potentially hazardous situations to the manager immediately.


Your responsibilities will include:


  • Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details
  • Constructing proof of concept experiments to test different elements of the process
  • Settingup lab/workshop according to research and/or course schedules
  • Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on labtechniques, experimental procedures and protocols
  • Modifying and testing experiments to determine practicality
  • Developing and implementing components of instructional programs
  • Preparing, assembling and settingup material, equipment and supplies used in teaching and/or research labs
  • Ensuring the safe handling of specialized lab equipment and materials while operating within close proximity to others

Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or an acceptable combination of equivalent experience and education. Master's degree in Chemistry or higher is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum three years of recent and relevant experience in providing technical and oversight support in an Undergraduate Chemistry teaching laboratory, including providing technical support to undergraduate students, handling standard chemistry laboratory instruments and designing lab experiments for instructional purposes.
  • Experience in calculating, scaling, preparing, and assembling solutions, materials, supplies, and equipment used for Chemistry labs
  • Experience in operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment including personal computer; photocopier; analytical instruments such as FTIR, UV-Vis, and AA/AE, gas, ion and liquid chromatographs; pH, ion selective, and reference electrodes; autotitrators.
  • Experience in maintaining and performing function checks on computers and data acquisition instrumentation
  • Experience in dealing with chemicals for hazardous materials such as chemicals and biologicals
  • Experience with inventory management database
  • Experience in designing and implementing components of instructional programs including undergraduate chemistry laboratory experiments
  • Experience preparing draft statistical reports and summaries from data collected
  • Experience developing a manual on best practices for lab operations
  • Proven ex
