Overview of the Community Capacity Development Program


Africa Centre supports local Black Community Grassroots organizations through capacity building initiatives, engagements and collaborations which encourage them to develop, implement and sustain initiatives that address issues affecting them and the people they serve.

Such community capacity development initiatives enable members of the Black community to have more autonomy over the direction of their lives and to develop skills and competencies that contribute to more inclusive local development.

Specific initiatives under the Community Capacity Development Program are:


  • Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI)
  • Funded by the Government of Canada, this program currently supports 68 grassroots organizations


  • Charity Partnership program

  • Edmonton Community Foundation and the Calgary Foundations support grassroots organizations by providing funding for projects, programs and capacity building initiatives.
  • Other ad hoc Capacity building initiatives through other partners including (but not limited to) the private sector, municipal government and provincial government.

Purpose of the position


Under the Direction of the Senior Manager, Program Development and Accountability, the Manager, Community Capacity Development Program is responsible for planning, developing, and managing learning and training initiatives to improve African descent serving agencies' governance capacity and organizational effectiveness.


Major Responsibilities

  • Capacity Building and Training
  • Identify and build partnerships with community organizations/groups, stakeholders and learning institutions to implement capacity building programs or initiatives.
  • Plan and lead the technical delivery of activities that will build the administrative and organizational capacity and quality of management of community organizations.
  • Coordinate the logistics for the delivery of online and inperson trainings
  • Support the ongoing evaluation of capacity building activities
  • Coaching Support and Guidance
  • Provide coaching support and guidance to community organizations in the development of key operational and structural documents such as strategic plans, program plans, etc.
  • Support organizations/groups in building administrative policies and procedures and implementation of effective and efficient management systems.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship support to community groups seeking charitable status, board development training and other priorities that will help community groups with regards to sustainability.


  • Networking

  • Develop and maintain connections between grassroots ethnocultural organizations, community leaders with internal and external programs and services relevant to their needs and priorities
  • Support recruitment and onboarding processes of new network members into capacity building activities and events
  • Actively participate in community capacity development tables as Africa Centre's representative


  • Project Management

  • Ensure budgets and cashflows for each partner organization are adhered to by reviewing submitted expenses for accuracy
  • Processing payments to partner organizations according to payment schedules outlined in the signed agreement
  • Oversee the management of SBCCI funded organizations as it relates to grant/partnership agreement requirements of providing capacity building coaching and guidance to supported organizations.
  • Organize and cofacilitate regular Community of Practice sessions that support community organizations in accessing knowledge, resources and sharing best practices.
  • Assist in the preparation of funder reports

Qualifications:

The minimum qualifications needed to perform the essential elements of the job, including the following:

  • Experience with training development and facilitation in a workshop setting
  • Knowledge of capacity building as it relates to strengthening of communities is desirable
  • Good understanding of the Notforprofit sector in Alberta
  • Established record of experience working in a similar position with nonprofit organizations preferably in African Canadian communities
  • Excellent interpersonal, wri
