Reporting to the Chair, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) is responsible for planning, developing, and providing operational management of the infrastructure required to support the Department's research and teaching activities.
- and long-term strategic plans for the department, in collaboration with the Chair; advises on the interpretation of collective agreement policies, financial policies and procedures; develops and implements administrative policies and procedures; develops and implements administrative policies and procedures to ensure efficient operation of the department; oversees and participates in the preparation of departmental budget; monitor all expenses; provides direction and leadership to departmental supervisors and hires, trains and manages staff; manages physical resources of department including space, teaching and research laboratories, equipment and furniture; ensures repairs, renovations, and security needs are effectively met and liaises with contractors.
Required Qualifications:
EDUCATION:
University degree in commerce, business, or financial management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. MBA or other relevant postgraduate degree is an asset.
EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum 5 years' related experience working in a senior administrative role, preferably in a postsecondary or researchintensive environment.
- Demonstrated success in strategic financial planning, proven ability to manage and oversee complex and multilevels of budgets.
- Practical knowledge in all phases of accountancy, and business practices.
- Knowledge of HR policies and practices; Health and Safety legislation and practices; knowledge of space management, academic HR policies, and IT systems required.
- Experience managing in a unionized environment and knowledge of academic principles and policies is desirable.
- Proven experience in overseeing all Information Technology needs and facilitating the development of new IT technology to enhance research endeavors.
- Experience in overseeing the development and implementation of new IT initiatives, software, policy, infrastructure, systems and programs.
SKILLS:
- Proficient using Microsoft 365, including advanced level skills with Microsoft Excel.
- Familiarity with financial information systems and accounting software.
- Sound knowledge of FIS and HRIS, or equivalent systems.
- Knowledge of best practices for website design and content
OTHER:
- Highly effective and responsive leadership skills.
- Superior interpersonal, communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills, consultative style with excellent listening skills.
- Ability to make effective presentations.
- Highly developed financial skills; proven effectiveness in the development of administrative systems.
- Proven ability to successfully develop and implement objectives under competing priorities and defined timelines.
This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto's Alternative Work Arrangements Guideline.
