  • Joan Holmes & Associates Inc. (JHA) is seeking an Editor & Researcher for full‐time employment. Our firm is a leader in the _
    historical research_ _consulting field. Our quality research and excellent reputation has made us a highly regarded company that is constantly in demand. Since 1983, we have been providing superior research, analysis, and document management services on Indigenous Peoples' claims and rights as well as a variety of litigation issues._
Applicants must have a minimum of
three years of editing experience.


DUTIES

  • Become familiar with deliverables for projects under guidance of managers.
  • Assist in design and creation of databases, spreadsheets, etc. for specific project purposes.
  • Assist managers with scheduling final editing of deliverables.
  • Ensure that final products (reports, databases, indices) are proofread and copy edited for spelling, grammar, and formatting. This task can be performed by the Editor or delegated and overseen by the Editor.
  • Ensure that footnotes in historical reports are correctly cited and accurately correspond to associated historical document collections (i.e., dates, correspondents, source references, etc.) and accompanying databases (document indices). This task can be performed by the Editor or delegated and overseen by the Editor.
  • Ensure that all deliverables (scanned images, document collections, indices, databases, reports, etc.) are complete and in required format (paper, digital). This task can be performed by the Editor or delegated and overseen by the Editor.
  • Ensure that the final deliverables are copied onto USB for delivery to client or prepared in client's preferred format. This task can be performed by the Editor or delegated and overseen by the Editor.
  • Ensure that all final deliverables and supporting documentation are properly archived in the office as per established protocols, including maintaining Finished Jobs and Project databases and Master Records Researched. This task can be performed by the Editor or delegated and overseen by the Editor.
  • Ensure proper archiving of files and deliverables.
  • Assign and oversee work performed by Editorial Assistant(s), co‐op student, and other staff to whom tasks are delegated.
  • Review archival files, published sources, and in‐house resources to collect relevant material.
  • Ensure proper referencing and electronic filing of all materials collected.
  • Perform database duties, including entering tombstone data, writing file and document summaries.
  • Miscellaneous research‐related duties (e.g., provide progress updates; attend project meetings; maintaining records of tasks performed, etc.).

Periodic tasks:_

  • Participate in sub‐committees as required to review procedures and processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness of JHA.
  • Attend project meetings to debrief on the progress of completed jobs, lessons learned, and best practices.
  • Update in‐house style guide as required.
  • Attend training sessions for new software and/or client protocols.
  • Conduct workshops with JHA staff and contractors to train on new procedures.
  • Monitor efficiency and effectiveness of all procedures.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • A minimum of three years of experience editing in a professional work environment.
  • Superior organizational skills.
  • Superb attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in the social sciences or humanities.
  • Primary and secondary research experience.
  • Demonstrated writing skills.
  • Ability to follow in‐house document management protocols and procedures.
  • Desire to expand and perfect research and writing skills.
  • Ability to take direction and to carry through work plans while working alone without supervision.
  • Meeting deadlines is imperative.
  • Proven ability to supervise and delegate.
  • Flexibility to work as an efficient team member.
  • Strong computer skills and database experience.
  • Federal government security clearance at Secret level (either possess or be eligible for).
  • Bilingualism an asset (French and/or an Indigenous language).
