Position Summary:


The Strategic Initiatives Analyst provides a high level of support on strategic dossiers in the portfolio of the Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation) [VPRI].

The role of the incumbent is primarily
_data analysis_ and

_support on strategic files._ Reporting to the Associate Director, Analysis and Planning, the Analyst is a member of the Research Planning and Analysis team within the Strategic Initiatives unit and collaborates closely with Associate Directors and Senior Advisors.

Due to the complexity of the various portfolios that fall within the unit's mandate, the incumbent must function with an exceptional level of accuracy, sound judgment and efficiency.


Primary Responsibilities:


The Analyst provides technical, analytic, and management support for activities related to research administration, strategic planning, and reporting, including data collection, analysis, and presentation.

The Analyst will participate in all aspects of data collection and analysis related to research funding and impact metrics (e.g., bibliometrics, research grants and contracts, chairs, prizes and awards, and innovation-related metrics).

The output is applied in a wide range of material and presentation, often related to mission critical decisions related to research investments.


The Analyst works with other units within the RI sector, and liaises with other sectors, for example Analysis, Planning and Budget (APB), Research Financial Management Services, staff in the offices of the Provost and Faculty Deans as well as with McGill's affiliated research institutes.


Description of specific responsibilities:
Data Analysis for priority initiatives

  • Manage the update of Research and Innovation Key Performance Indicators for research (KPIs) on an annual basis including data collection, analysis, benchmarking with other institutions; proposing revisions and improvements to the research KPIs.
  • Manage the update of the Research and Innovation Annual Report.
  • Providing data and analysis to support largescale research projects.
Data Analysis to inform decision making/provide information to key stakeholders

  • Works with data from a variety of internal and external agencies, such as McGill's internal grants management system, the Tri-Agencies, Canada Research Chair Program, and the Canada Foundation for Innovation.
  • Participate in all aspects of data collection and analysis related to research funding and impact metrics, e.g. bibliometrics, research grants and contracts, chairs, prizes and awards, and innovationrelated metrics.
  • Prepare and maintain dashboards to suit specific stakeholder information needs.
  • Respond to data and _ad hoc_ information request from the McGill research community including the Vice-Principal (Research and Innovation), Faculty Associate Deans of Research, and research groups often requiring a needs assessment to interpret information requirements.
  • Conducts ongoing data validation to support institutional data integrity. This includes ensuring consistent reporting and identifying and reconciling inconsistencies.
  • Stay abreast of funding trends in higher education in Canada.
  • Design and maintain surveys and manage resulting data sets. Assume other responsibilities or tasks related to the support of research data and other strategic initiatives for the University as assigned.
Management and administration of institutional programs

  • Administration and management of the institutional program _Research Support Fund (RSF) and Incremental Project Grant (IPG) _provided by the Federal government. This includes managing data; preparing agreements with McGill's affiliated research hospitals and other institutions; submitting requests for funding; developing process to streamline administration; and preparing the annual institutional report in collaboration with the Office of the Vice-Principal (Administration and Finance).
  • Use professional expertise, to ensure process and procedures for annual activities related to administration of the RSF/IPG program are well documented and updated in close collaboration with the Assistant Vice-Principal Research Development and Associate Director, Analysis and Planning.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

Undergraduate degree is required.

Bachelor's degree with analytical training, such as mathematics, educational research, statistics, psychology, computer science, accounting, or related field that has an emphasis on information management.

Graduate degree is preferred.

Extensive experience in Excel, including use of pivot tables as well as Power Query, to create data queries to edit, transform and load data.

Experience in creating data visualizations, dashboards or data reports, using software such as Tableau and/or PowerBI. Experience working with databases a strong asset (e.g., Oracle). Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (e.g., SharePoint, Microsoft Lists). Excel
