Program Coordinator in Community Safety. The Program Coordinator (Coordinator), Safe City and Safe Public Spaces, supports the implementation of the Public Safety Strategy by coordinating the implementation of Safe City and Safe Public Spaces program initiatives and supporting municipal and community-based initiatives aimed at ending gender-based violence.
  • Halifax is a member of UN Women's Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces Global Flagship Initiative. The program is intended to increase organizational capacity to promote social and systemic change towards ending sexual violence against women, girls, and genderdiverse residents with a focus on intersectionality. It focuses on a collaborative approach to developing locally relevant and owned interventions, policy reform and social norms change.
  • The Coordinator will be responsible for developing the capacity of HRM and local partners to more effectively prevent and respond to sexual violence in public spaces; lead efforts to enhance resources to support communities; advance local community safety capacity through training and skills development; and increase the knowledge base of the specific risk and protective factors in communities related to genderbased violence.
  • The Coordinator will be part of a team working in close collaboration with community members and other partners to identify and address issues contributing to community safety

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Lead coordination of initiatives within the Safe City and Safe Public Spaces Program, consistent with the program's goals, objectives, workplan and theory of change
  • Promote the program and its goals, objectives, and outcomes, with internal and external partners and communities
  • Monitor and evaluate program initiatives and provide regular reports on success and barriers to progress
  • Lead and facilitate community engagement and dialogue on issues of community safety and preventing and responding to genderbased violence
  • Collaborate with business units and key partners to make recommendations for community safety improvements
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community leaders, public/private agencies/nonprofit organizations and other levels of government
  • Conduct and support qualitative and quantitative research and analysis into community safety issues and topics, with special focus on genderbased violence, and safety in public spaces with a focus on intersectionality
  • Produce a range written and verbal communication material of including reports, presentations and briefing notes
  • Set priorities, create a productive work environment, and produce tangible and effective deliverables
  • Transfer results of communitybased research into policy change recommendations for relevant Business Units
  • Other duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:


  • Postsecondary degree in Urban/Regional Planning, Community Development, Gender or Equity studies or other relevant discipline or equivalent experience
  • Minimum three (3) years' experience in the field of public policy and administration and/or program coordination
  • An equivalent combination of related training and community experience may be considered

Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of intersectionality, and the underlying factors that contribute to gender-based violence
  • Knowledge and experience in assetbased, traumainformed, antiracist, antioppressive approaches to community engagement
  • Demonstrated selfmotivation and ability to take initiative independently and with a team to achieve results
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative research, including statistical analysis
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong leadership and relationship building skills
  • Demonstrated experience in culturally appropriate ways of developing constructive working relationships with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, including those associated with race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, socioeconomic status, age, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and/or other aspects of human diversity
  • Ability to work within a fastpaced environment with all levels of management and staff performing multi tasks

WORK STATUS:Permanent, full-time
HOURS OF WORK: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm; 35 hours per week
SALARY: NU06 on the non-union salary scale; $66,770-$91,810.
