Job Description:


Accountabilities:

  • Check for time stamp on all requisitions; ensure specimens are labeled according to protocol and match requisitions
  • Register patient information in computer as needed; accessioning specimens, labels, numbers specimens
  • Separate out fresh tissue and stat specimens following protocols; alert pathologist assistant
  • Make slides and cassettes, ensuring numbers are correct and traceable to original
  • Clean wax molds and embedding stations after use; sweep up excess wax flakes
  • Maintenance of embedding stations, routine stainers, tissue processors, cover slippers, solvent recycler, fridges, freezers, ovens, and other equipment as assigned
  • Discard blocks, slides, requisitions, and wet specimens according to retention directives and waste management protocols
  • Cover slip slides and arrange cases in folders
  • Prepare specimens for referral or consult
  • Organize blocks and slides for cytology
  • Deliver containers to operating room frozen section room as required
  • Appropriately disposes of hazardous wastes
  • Actively participates in the Laboratory quality management system and process improvements
  • Other histology duties as assigned

Qualifications:


  • Ontario secondary school diploma
  • Graduate of certified medical laboratory assistant/technician program
  • Must have current certification and registration with OSMT and/or CSMLS
  • Minimum two years experience working in a hospital pathology laboratory setting is preferred
  • Medical terminology preferred
  • Knowledge of Meditech, Paradigm and Microsoft Office programs would be an asset
  • Comfortable dealing with surgical and autopsy specimens and the deceased
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Proven ability to be a team player
  • Strong multitasking and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and maintain high level of productivity, competence and professionalism

  • Excellent attendance, punctuality and work record
  • May be required to travel between and work at all Osler sites
