What Does an Electrical Lead Hand Do?:

The Electrical Lead Hand is responsible for supervising the electrical crew by directing the day-to-day field electrical operations for all work sites within the Contract Directed Maintenance Contract (CDMC).

Their primary role is to ensure planning, laying out, installing, and wiring electrical components are completed, as per project drawings, specifications and in accordance with applicable electrical codes.

This position will oversee the work and job performance on sites and will ensure ongoing attention to work-site safety, standards, and legislation are met.


As an Electrical Lead Hand, You Will:

  • Promote, lead, and execute a Safety-First culture for all employees, sub-contractors, and consultants in compliance with Miller Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) polices and ensure contractual HSE obligation for the staff and public are met
  • Estimate time, materials and equipment required to complete tasks
  • Provide electrical troubleshooting services to equipment, facilities, and plants
  • Installation, programming and/or maintenance of traffic signal & roadway lighting systems
  • Preparation and submittal of required reports, documentation, and logs
  • Perform power distribution work including consumer services, switchboards, MCCs, and transformers
  • Read and interpret drawings, blueprints, schematics, and electrical code specifications to determine layout of electrical equipment installations
  • Install, examine, replace or repair electrical wiring, receptacles, switch boxes, conduits, feeders, lighting fixtures and other electrical components
  • Test electrical equipment and components for continuity, current, voltage and resistance
  • Maintain, repair, install and test switchgear, transformers, switchboard meters
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair electrical and low voltage control systems and other related devices

As an Electrical Lead Hand, You Will:

  • Maintain a safe work environment by adhering to all company guidelines and OSHA safety requirements and through reporting violations of policies, procedures and guidelines to immediate supervisor
  • Controlling inventory on truck, jobsite, and in/out of stock (for active jobs);
  • Organize and maintain material lists for your crew
  • Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean
  • Work with building principals and supervisors to complete projects
  • Detect needed repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment following established inspection procedures
  • Plan and organize tasks and procure materials for work projects and activities
  • Prioritize, organize, and allocate tasks to assigned crew
  • Arrange and coordinate safety meetings
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to crew members
  • Be the point of contact with the general contractor's site superintendent
  • Supervise and train apprentices on the job, as required
  • Respond to emergency calls as needed
  • Partner with Electrical supervisor in managing the performance of the team
  • Other duties as assigned

What You'll Bring:


  • 5+ years of electrical experience and 1+ years of experience in supervisory role
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician or associated certifications, an asset
  • Knowledge of MTO and municipal specifications pertaining to electrical work, an asset
  • OTM Book 7 knowledge and implementation
  • Experience with elevated work platforms, bucket trucks, or similar equipment
  • Familiarity with Ontario and Canadian electrical codebook guidelines
  • 309A Construction and Maintenance Electrician License
  • Valid Class G driver's license with a clean driver's abstract, and the ability to obtain Class DZ within 6 months
  • Proficient in academic and practical knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code
  • Experience in troubleshooting electrical equipment and systems (fire alarm, distribution, etc)
  • Proven track record of leading by example and providing exceptional guidance to crew
  • Ability to form material lists
  • Good troubleshooting skills, repair abilities and installation skills
  • Able to work in high pressure, time sensitive conditions
  • Attention to detail with a wellrounded work ethic and positive attitude
  • Superb communications skills and customer service orientation
  • Ability to supervise others' work and coach for performance
