Job Number:49219**The Waste Services Branch is currently looking for a Waste Leader. This position is at the heart of the plant's operations, playing a pivotal role in monitoring and controlling the various processes within the IPTF. This role requires a high level of vigilance and technical skill to ensure that all operations are running smoothly and efficiently, and that any issues are swiftly identified and addressed. The operator works closely with Plant Operators and the Plant Supervisor to maintain optimal plant performance.


The position will also be responsible for providing field-level supervision to teams of operators, as well as oversee the deployment of staff, and to collaborate with other Waste Leaders roles on program delivery.

The leader will also be responsible for plant operations utilizing a HMI and field level operations on a daily basis and be familiar with PLC logics.


What will you be doing?

  • Participate in and support the planning and development of Sustainable Waste Processing strategies, initiatives and performance measures
  • Implement corporate, branch and section initiatives throughout the areas
  • Implement consistent standards for customer service and the employee experience
  • Monitor day to day performance of contracted maintenance service to ensure the work is being conducted according to the contract specifications
  • Work in collaboration with Fleet & Facilities to ensure vehicles/equipment and sites are ready and available as required
  • Maintain awareness of the budget and make recommendations to leadership regarding budget costs Identify and ensure the provision of resources (materials, equipment and supplies) required to implement approved work plans; procure require items (daytoday purchases)
  • Monitor the operational condition and efficiency of staffing, schedule and arrange for maintenance and repair activity, and respond to equipment malfunction and service problems
  • Respond to incoming emergency requests such as chemical releases, etc. and ensure that release handling is conducted in accordance with approved procedures
  • Conduct regular safety and work reviews to ensure work is being performed in a proper and safe manner
  • Conduct incident/accident investigations including observations and near misses
  • Provide support and backup for all Waste Leaders across the Section as required
  • Ensure all City of Edmonton directives, policies and guidelines, e.g. OH&S standards and policies are followed in the execution of work
  • Coordinate daily assignments to staff in accordance with plans and schedules, matching staff and equipment resources to specific needs
  • Receive incoming complaints and issues from staff and provide required direction and support on a timely basis
  • Provide feedback from field regarding purchases, or leased equipment
  • Complete reports of finished work, variances from work schedules, observed field conditions and maintenance issues, equipment problems, staff performance and discipline issues etc.
  • Provide continuous coaching and feedback to staff, including mentorship and providing advice and guidance
  • Provide support in setting work performance expectations and job standards for crews; assist in the performance reviews and seasonal evaluations

Qualifications:


  • Completion of Grade 1
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in waste management processing and disposal activities and associated equipment is required
  • Leadership/Aspiring Leaders/Supervisor 101 training or equivalent or ability to complete the City of Edmonton approved Supervisor training within an 18month time frame of employment in this position

Skills Required for Success:


  • Considerable knowledge of the equipment, procedures, and associated policies and Bylaws related to the City's Waste Management processes
  • Knowledge and hands on skill in the operation of loaders, excavators, skid steers, backhoes, forklifts etc.
  • Experience with using a HMI to operate a plant, Geoware, SAP plant maintenance and google sheets
  • Knowledge and experience with scada operating systems in a plant environment that includes boilers
  • Skilled in the operation of vehicles and associated equipment, the use and demonstration of proper lifting techniques and safety procedures
  • Extensive knowledge of OH&S legislation, Enviso and WHMIS
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to effectively supervise the daily ongoing activities of a large workforce, including performance monitoring, and attendance management
  • Exceptionally strong communication (written and verbal), customer service, interpersonal and decision making skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multidisciplinary team environment
  • Strong organization, problemsolving, conflict management, and decision making skills
  • Applicants may be tested
