This is a one-year temporary assignment supporting the McGill Institute for Advanced Materials (MIAM) and the McGill Institute for Aerospace Engineering (MIAE), with the possibility of renewal.


Position Summary:
Promote and present a consistent image of McGill as a major institution of international calibre.

Develop and implement communication services consistent with the University's mission and objectives, including news, public relations, social media, translation, graphic design, audio-visual, photography, web and multimedia.

Maximize philanthropic support and increase alumni involvement by promoting strong relationships with donors, alumni, volunteers, students, employees, external organizations, government, and communities of interest.

Organize conferences, symposia, workshops, campaigns and fundraising events. Publish manuscripts, books, textbooks, magazines, brochures and newsletters. Develop advertising, sales and marketing techniques and practices.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identifies opportunities for MIAM's/MIAE's online and social media presence in order to produce new content, expand readership and increase engagement with the MIAM/MIAE brand.
  • Prepares and disseminates information concerning MIAM/MIAE research, events, student initiatives and other activities through social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter), posters, newsletters, slides, and audio and visual communication media.
  • Liaises with the Faculty of Engineering's Digital Marketing Administrator to promote events, activities and outreach both to the McGill community and to external entities.
  • Contributes to the development of policies and new communications initiatives that support the daily operation of MIAM/MIAE.
  • Creates web content. Reviews trends and best practices in digital communications, web development, digital fundraising and social media for higher education.
  • Writes and edits articles and/or promotional material, as required. Drafts official correspondence on behalf of MIAM/MIAE and assists in the preparation of briefings and opening remarks, as needed. Conducts research for press releases and other mediafocused materials.
  • Seeks out and cultivates partnerships with campus communications units and inhouse designers, and organizes production of communications and promotional materials (i.e. invitations, event schedules, banners, etc.).
  • Liaises with the University's graphic design services in order to produce promotional materials (i.e. student recruitment promotional material) and oversees graphic design, photographic, print and other resources to post to websites and other media.
  • Supports administrative tasks related to MIAM/MIAE events and activities and acts as backup resource person. Participates in special projects as needed.
  • Responsible for mailing lists and marketing accounts (Mailchimp, Eventbrite, etc.), researches methods and best practices to increase engagement with and participation of key target audiences (i.e. academics, students, general public, etc.) in MIAM/MIAE activities and events.
  • Monitors analytics for social media and website activity in order to compile statistics and data for quarterly reports on web and social media performance using a variety of analytical tools including Google Analytics.
  • Prepares process and procedures reference documentation, specifically material related to the social media, branding and digital communications best practices.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

  • Undergraduate Degree in Communications an asset
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to create content, both written and visual, for a variety of mediums (e.g. web articles, promotional material, social media).
  • Passion for design and digital marketing and a proficiency in related platforms and programs (Adobe Photoshop, Canva, InDesign and Illustrator,etc.).
  • Experience in Website Maintenance (ideally Platform Drupal, WordPress), HTML/CSS; ideally familiar with photo and video production (Premiere Pro) on digital/ social media (Facebook, Instagram).
  • Expertise in monitoring analytics for social media and website activity, using a variety of tools (e.g. Google Analytics); ability to identify trends and create reports.
  • McGill University is an Englishlanguage university where day to day duties do require English communication skills both verbally and in writing, this position specifically is requiring excellent English language skills, French language skills on bilingual level.
