Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Technician (Continuous)
Engineering and Public Works
POSITION FUNCTION
Participate in the on-going development, maintenance and expansion of the City's geographic information and peripheral systems.
KEY DUTIES
Maintain geospatial data, as well as design and creation of digital mapping products, such as City wide geospatial mapping tools.
Use GIS and other applicable software to create and maintain spatial and attribute data including the initial entry, review, revision and quality control of data; create maps, plans, drawings, presentation material, documents, databases and other digital products utilizing GIS knowledge and skills; assist with identifying data issues and anomalies and strategies to correct them and receive, evaluate and integrate data received from external agencies; maintain contact with software vendor and recommend updates to web server software as new versions released; safeguard the security and integrity of mapping data.
Assist in maintenance of a complete, accurate, and centralized asset management inventory.Assist with organization and communication related to in-house training sessions for GIS. Prepare regular status reports to highlight GIS issues requiring attention. Create and document procedures such as standards, file locations, conventions.
Respond to requests for infrastructure information related to City owned infrastructure and other utility services to engineering staff and other departments for service installations, emergency repairs and maintenance projects.
INDEPENDENCE
Work is generated by annual objectives, system requirements and requests for service or as assigned by supervisor.
Work is reviewed upon completion.
Problems such as deviation from established procedures are referred to Supervisor.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Effort:
Sit with arms unsupported while keyboarding. (often)
Mental Effort:
Long periods of intense concentration while dealing with computer files. (frequent)
Visual/Auditory Effort:
Focus on a variety of small print or details and computers for long periods. (frequent)
Work Environment:
Office.
KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Organize and prioritize work.
Advanced level operation of current City advanced specialty software, including ESRI.
Provide technical guidance and advice to user departments.
Research and analyze needs and facilitate meetings and workshops.
Create procedural documentation.
Maintain accurate records.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Represent the City to the public and outside agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
Technical School diploma including advanced courses in GIS, computer-aided graphics, mapping and modelling. (2 years)
Experience:
2 years of related GIS experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
Work schedule:
Monday to Friday, (35) hour work week
$42.30 per hour, Pay Grade 12
