Description

Help bring research to life and drive your career forward with the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Canada's largest research and technology organization.

The RO will establish a novel and productive research program at NRC's Aquatic and Crop Resource Development (ACRD) Research Centre facilities in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, attracting international academic and industrial collaborators and clients.seeking to scale up fermentation processes to produce bio-based products.

Screening Criteria:

Education:

PhD in Microbiology, Fermentation Science, Biomanufacturing, Bioprocess Engineering or closely related field.

For information on certificates and diplomas issued abroad, please see Degree equivalency

Experience:

  • Significant research experience in scaling up submerged, batchfed fermentation and microbial conversion processes to produce highvalue products, chemicals and/or materials. Must demonstrate experience taking a process from laboratory (defined as 10 L reaction volume) through to precommercial pilot scale (defined as 1000 L reaction volume).
  • Experience in scaling up processes utilizing renewable agricultural and marine biomass and/or atypical feedstocks (e.g. starch, lignocellusic sugars, methanol) with commercially
- or industrially-relevant bacterial, yeast or fungal microorganisms

  • Experience in the use and operation of repeatuse bioreactors with reaction volumes of at least 1000 L for fermentation process development and optimization, including instrument setup, operation under sterile conditions, routine care and maintenance, and basic troubleshooting to adapt to specific process requirements.
  • Experience in the use of diverse supporting equipment required for fermentation process development and optimization at scale, such as cleaninplace (CIP), sterilizeinplace (SIP), clean utility generation (e.g. steam), water generation systems, bulk fluid handling and transfer, centrifugation, etc.
  • Experience with collecting and evaluating routine inprocess batch and endproduct analytics to inform fermentation process development and optimization
  • Significant experience in the full spectrum of research activities including identification of research requirements, proposal writing, project management, data production and analysis, and reporting through written documentation, presentations and publishing.
  • Experience in the leadership of teams with diverse skillsets, including strain engineering, upstream and downstream processing, and analytical and natural product chemistry.
  • Experience in business development and fostering collaborations and interactions with external partners.
