RADIATION SAFETY OFFICER (RSO)

LOCATION - OTTAWA, ON

STATUS - FULL TIME

We manufacture external beam therapy units, self contained blood irradiators, and line of cyclotrons (B14p, B35p and the B70p) for radioisotope production.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


Best Theratronics possess a Class 1B Nuclear facility from the CNSC authorizing the manufacturing and international distribution of Class II prescribed equipment and nuclear substance radiation devices.

Best

Theratronics possesses additional licenses from the CNSC and USNRC to service these devices in the field.

Reporting to the President, the incumbent will be responsible for radiation safety and nuclear regulatory compliance with respect to both staff and facility


Responsibilities include:

  • Regulatory contact for external agencies (i.e. CNSC, USNRC etc.) and leading regulatory audits
  • Oversee coordination of radiological related shipments, including safeguarded material, in accordance with the PTNSR and the provisions of the IAEA for Category 1 and 2 radioactive material
  • Managing nuclear regulatory compliance reporting for CNSC licenses
  • Developing and implementing radiation protection controls, processes, and procedures o Complete Gap Analyses between company procedures and regulatory documents
  • Preparing, reviewing, and revising radiation protection and radioactive material handling documents
  • Establishing, implementing, and maintaining radiation protection performance models and metrics
  • Monitoring radiation protection related nonconformances and corrective actions
  • Performing radiation protection compliance inspections
  • Conducting ALARA assessment and reviews, postwork ALARA reviews
  • Managing radiation source inventory and records
  • Managing radiation source leak testing program
  • Conducting facility compliance inspections as a Health & Safety Committee member
  • Review and approval of the selection and procurement of radiation and contamination measuring and monitoring equipment
  • Oversee decommissioning/decontamination methods and techniques
  • Preparing and delivering training courses on site for Nuclear Energy Workers, radiation safety, and transportation of dangerous goods
  • Responding to and investigating of unplanned events
  • Lead the emergency radiation response as an Emergency Response Team member

QUALIFICATIONS & KNOWLEDGE:

  • University degree in health physics, or closely related engineering or science discipline
  • Possess working knowledge of the Nuclear Safety and Controls Act and o General Nuclear Safety and Control Regulations o Radiation Protection Regulations o Class II Nuclear Facilities and Prescribed Equipment Regulations o Nuclear Substance and Radiation Devices Regulations o Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances Regulations
  • Working knowledge of health physics/radiation safety technical operations
  • Skilled in the use of radiation detection equipment
  • Completed training in a Radiation Safety Officer course, an asset
  • Previous experience participating in regulatory inspections, an asset

  • Management and leadership abilities
  • Excellent presentation skills, interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills essential
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple priorities and meet strict deadlines
  • Must have effective time management skills and be able to be self directed
  • Must possess advanced skills and be highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access and Excel)
  • Must be prepared to carry out "handson" activities as required
  • Willing to be designated as a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW)
