Director, Development and Communications


Overview:


The Development and Communications team is responsible for developing and executing strategies to elevate fundraising, marketing and public outreach, engaging our donors and audience of supporters through events and online communications channels, and articulating FoodShare's unique impact and value.


As the Director of Development and Communications, you will bring a food justice and equity lens to lead and inspire a high-performing team of fundraisers, marketers and communicators, and as a member of FoodShare's Senior Leadership team you will take an active role in shaping the strategic direction and organizational culture of FoodShare as a whole.


Duties include (but are not limited to):


Leadership and Management:


  • Provide leadership, direction and management for the Development and Communications team, contributing to an environment of collaboration, respect, creativity, accountability and high performance
  • Serve on the senior leadership team: providing overarching support to the FoodShare team and developing organizational policy and culture
  • Participate in the development of annual and multiyear operational and financial plans that align with the overall Strategic Plan. 2024 is a strategic planning year, and the Director, Development & Communications will play a role in shaping the strategic direction and associated action plans.
  • Oversee and support the development of annual work plans, funding targets and strategies
  • Provide mentorship to direct reports, including conducting performance reviews, identifying opportunities for growth and development, and more
  • Support the development of systems and ways of working that enhance collaboration, streamline processes and generate positive outcomes across the department
  • Serve as FoodShare's Privacy Officer. Develop and implement policies, practices and standards that protect FoodShare's reputation and stakeholder information, and ensure that legislative requirements are met (ie. CRA, CASL)
  • Build relationships with and represent FoodShare to key partners such as funders and other supporters as required
  • Ensure effective metrics and evaluation are in place to track progress, insight and performance of marketing, communications and development activities

Revenue Growth:


  • Oversee and support fund development initiatives such as Individual Giving, Planned Giving, Corporate Sponsorships, Foundation Grants, Mid-Level and Major Gifts and Donor recognition, Legacy giving
  • Oversee and support marketing initiatives for earned revenue activities including food distribution and other programdriven entrepreneurial activities.
  • Work with the Executive Director, other senior leaders and Board members to identify and cultivate strong new prospects, including donor stewardship
  • Manage a personal portfolio of key donors and prospects at the major gift level

Required Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience:


  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada
  • 2+ years experience at senior management/director level
  • 3+ years experience leading a team that includes supervising and mentoring supervisors
  • 3+ years experience in leading the development of successful, measurable strategies for fundraising and/or marketing and communications
  • 3+ years of experience of managing a personal portfolio of key donors/client contacts/program partners and prospects
  • Ability to demonstrate measurable results in revenue generation and growth (fundraising, marketing and sales, business development, etc.)
  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication
  • Understanding of intersectionality and commitment to working within an antioppression/antiracism framework
  • Demonstrated interest in FoodShare's mission, values and work, along with a strong understanding of principles of food justice and equity and an ability to embed these principles in the development and communications work
  • Experience with donor databases an asset (ie. Raiser's Edge, Salesforce)

Compensation and Culture:


Base Salary:
$84,000 annually (37.5 hours/week)


Benefits:

Extended health and dental benefits at start; RRSP or TFSA contributions after successful completion of probation period; 4 weeks paid vacation + paid winter shutdown per year; monthly cell phone and internet reimbursement available; 20 paid personal emergency leave/sick days per year; 10 paid personal days per calendar year.
