    The opportunity

    As the Safety Specialist, you will report to the Manager Safety, West for Canada Gas Safety and be responsible for supporting and monitoring health and safety throughout all phases of Operations and support services (e.g., warehouses, reliability projects). We are seeking an experienced individual who will have strong leadership characteristics, a passion for safety, with a proven track record of influencing teams to positive outcomes. The Safety Specialist will provide effective health and safety support to Operations personnel and leadership and assist with the implementation of the TC Energy's Operational Management System (TOMS) and its associated programs. This position requires regular travel across the Region to facility locations.

    What you'll do


    • Collaborate with our safety team, through our central safety team, and with industry partners to continually enhance and execute on our safety vision, strategy, and tactics

    • Conducting and acting as an expert resource for incident, near hit, and 24/7 SHARE investigations, developing and implementing innovative and practical solutions

    • Effectively promote a proactive, positive safety culture

    • Champion health and safety in the region and on projects; monitor and coach

    • Participate in/support Regional JHSEC Committee

    • Provide overall H&S support for regionally and support the H&S teams


    • Interpret and provide guidance on occupational health and safety regulations, internal specifications and standards, and best practices.

    • Prepare/provide safety training and awareness presentations at meetings

    • Develop and review Job Safety Analysis, Site Specific Safety Plans, Emergency Response Plans, Journey Management Plans, etc.

    • Actively participate in H&S-related meetings (pre-job, safety stand-down, project lessons learned, incident response meetings, etc.)

    • Lead and complete regional and project H&S inspections and audits to evaluate compliance

    • Interacting with regulators and external visitors during onsite inspections

    • Participate in contractor evaluations as part of the contractual bid review process

    • Promote and support use of the Incident reporting database

    • Analyze H&S related data, provide and present consolidated reports on H&S performance for various stakeholders

    • Provide root cause analysis support and lead/assist with incident investigations, review incident reports for accuracy and coach employees, as required

    • Assist with the implementation and tracking of H&S corrective actions to address planned inspection, audit findings, and incident investigation outcomes

    • Evaluate and participate in job safety analyses, pre-start up reviews and commissioning

    • Conduct various assessments (e.g., sound level surveys)

    Minimum Qualifications


    • University degree, diploma or technical training in the disciplines of Health and Safety

    • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in oil and gas or pipeline operational experience (e.g., upstream, midstream or downstream operations)

    • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

    • Technical expertise in Health and Safety management

    • Knowledge of applicable provincial and federal legislation

    • Highly motivated with interpersonal skills to effectively work in a collaborative team environment that includes shared responsibilities, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others, support team and company objectives, and a willingness to work in all areas required by the team

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Preference will be given to applicants with a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation, or equivalent safety certification is an asset

    • English/French bilingual proficiency would be considered an asset

    • Superior technical and report writing abilities

    • Ability to develop and conduct presentations to a variety of audiences

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

    • Ability to effectively and efficiently organize action as part of an H&S team

    • Ability to learn quickly, open to change and focused on continuous improvement

    • Ability to effectively support multiple projects concurrently

    • Demonstrated ability to build constructive and effective business relationships

    • Dedicated to meeting tight deadlines, expectations and requirements of internal and external stakeholders

    • Strong computer aptitude (including SAP and Microsoft Office suite)

    • Ability to work independently within a team environment

    • Experience within gas or other industrial settings

    *This position requires the successful candidate to:


    • Successfully complete background screening including a pre-hire medical and alcohol and drug testing

    • Have and maintain a valid Driver's License, and provide a drivers abstract for review

    • Have the ability to travel up to two weeks per month to project locations


    • Regular field visits to station/pipeline work sites to ensure health and safety standards are maintained and supported. Approximately of 30% to 50% travel.
