    Salary Range: SP5, Level 7, $134,832- $202,248 per year. The final compensation for this position will be determined based on individual factors, including education, qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

    For more than 75 years Alberta's oil and gas regulator has adapted to meet innovations in technology, new industry activity and changing social expectations.

    Law Branch members are involved in all aspects of regulating energy resource activity from cradle to grave in the province. The work is varied, stimulating, and rewarding. You will work closely with a diverse technical community on a wide range of matters.

    We are seeking an individual who is passionate about working on complex files in a collaborative and team-based environment, and keen to deliver results. Law Branch is committed to providing legal and strategic advice that is timely, practical, and solutions and delivery focused.

    What your day-to-day will look like:

    • Provide legal and strategic advice independently on matters of moderate to high complexity to AER personnel in all branches and offices, including hearing commissioners and delegated decision makers, on all facets of the AER's business and regulatory functions, in particular the processing of regulatory appeals, applications and related statements of concern and providing legal support on closure, compliance and enforcement matters.
    • Hearing and litigation support including participation in AER hearings and representing the AER in appeal matters in the Court of Appeal of Alberta and other courts and tribunals where a decision of the AER has been challenged (e.g., OIPC, Human Rights Commission, Alberta Ombudsman, Court of Kings Bench, etc.).
    • Provide legal analysis, interpretation, advice and opinions regarding AER administered legislation and legislation (including FOIP legislation, insolvency legislation and related jurisprudence) to which the AER is subject, rules and regulatory instruments, and support policy development through membership on applicable internal committees.

    What we're looking for in you:

    • Applicants are required to be a member in good standing of The Law Society of Alberta. Please include your year of call to the Alberta Law Society in your resume.
    • 12+ years of experience providing legal services in at least two of the following areas: administrative/regulatory law, litigation/appeals, and/or energy/environmental law.
    • Experience in insolvency, procurement/contract law, and/or FOIP matters is considered an asset.
    • Experience working in-house in a public/regulatory body, quasi-judicial board or agency, or government environment is considered an asset.
    • Ability to identify issues proactively and provide innovative, strategic and practical advice and solutions.
    • A collaborative team player who actively mentors others and works seamlessly with technical staff to implement solutions.
    • A strategic thinker with a high attention to detail who focuses on providing practical advice

    Additional Requirements

    • SEC1 - This position will be subject to pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.
    • Travel within Alberta as required (for hearings, ADR etc.).
    • This role has a business requirement to work from Calgary.
