Day Camp Floater Counsellors are responsible for ensuring the successful day-to-day implementation of the camp programming.

They are responsible for supporting day camp counsellors at both our indoor and outdoor locations by covering breaks, staff absences, program transitions, and group dynamics.

This person needs to be flexible and adaptable, as they will jump into difference scenarios and camp programs.

Floater Counsellors will ensure that all children and youth have a safe and positive camp experience leading to personal growth and leadership opportunities.


In this role, you will:


  • Responsible for covering day camp counsellor groups and delivering programs during break coverages and staff absences
  • Assist as second counsellor for programming, group and behavior management
  • Program plan and ensure daily and weekly YMCA camp plans are completed and in line with meeting objectives of program modules set up by supervisors
  • Participate enthusiastically in all camp programs with camper group, including recreational swimming
  • Responsible for attending all staff trainings and meetings; arriving on time, and actively participating and contributing to the development of all camp staff
  • Ensure Health & Safety procedures are being followed and maintained and contribute to the cleaning, safety and maintenance to camp sites
  • Act as a positive role model for the campers and fellow staff through embodying the YMCA values, policies and procedures, Day Camp conditions of employment/guidelines and the Ontario Camping Association standards

You bring:


  • Minimum age 16 by December 31st
  • Minimum 1 year previous camp experience, Y Day Camp is preferred
  • Standard First Aid and CPR 'C' certificate valid until the last day of contract
  • Experience working with children preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work well both independently and in a team environment
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal, and relationship building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with families, staff and volunteers
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to lead a group of children
  • Experience and sensitivity in dealing with members of different cultural and racial backgrounds, including visible and nonvisible dimensions of diversity
