Position Description:

The Emergency Department (ED) at SickKids is a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment. We care for patients aged 0-18 years who present with illness and injury at different varying levels of severity. The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) role is integral in the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Duties include phlebotomy, conducting ECGs, assisting patients and families as they navigate and flow through various areas of the ED, providing therapeutic holds of patients during procedures, and assisting the interdisciplinary team.


The EMT works as a member of the ED team, reporting to the Senior Clinical Manger, and under the direct supervision of a Clinical Support Nurse (CSN) throughout each shift.


Here is what you will get to do:

  • Phlebotomy
  • Electrocardiography (ECG)
  • Point of Care Testing (POCT)
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team
  • Assist with patient and family wayfinding
  • Provide therapeutic holds of patients during procedures

Here is what you will need:

  • At least 2 years of experience in an acute-care setting
  • Previous experience in a paediatric setting an asset
  • Strong understanding of service excellence and familycentered care
  • Proficiency with technology and computers, previous experience with patient information systems and electronic medical record an asset
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and organization skills
  • An ability to adapt easily to change and remain flexible in a busy and dynamic clinical environment
  • Be able to work well independently and in a team setting with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Be able to exercise good judgment in assessing and resolving difficult situations
  • Have demonstrated the ability to build rapport and relate well to children
  • Have established references and a criminal record check
  • Be able to provide the Hospital with documented proof of tuberculosis testing and immunization status
  • Have a good command of the English language, both verbal and written

Education

  • Secondary school diploma with certification as a Phlebotomy Technician/Medical Laboratory Assistant and ECG Technician

Employment Type
Permanent part-time (0.5 FTE) position with benefits, paid sick time and pension

Shifts include day, evening and overnight, 7 days/week
