    The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator is recruiting for a Senior Air Quality Scientist to join its talented team of professionals in the Technical Science and External Innovation Branch. The Senior Air Quality Scientist will work within the Principal Environmental Scientist Team in an advanced technical role that contributes scientific capacity to achieving organizational objectives.

This role will use air quality models to determine energy sector contributions to air quality conditions. The position will involve setting up, running, and reporting results from models, preparing data products, developing, and managing data within an overall air quality monitoring, modelling, and decision support system.

The Senior Air Quality Scientist also will develop novel tools to support and enhance regulatory and compliance processes. The Principal Environmental Science Team is comprised of subject matter experts in environmental sciences and works with environmental science staff across the organization.

What your day-to-day will look like:

    • Develop, update, and maintain air quality models, databases, and associated software tools. Apply knowledge and analytical skills related to air quality modelling, air emission sources, and air quality standards.
    • Develop and maintain novel decision support systems using air quality models and data, including writing computer scripts to process emissions data and simulation output, generate GIS maps, and perform statistical analysis.
    • Support Operations Branches in conducting analysis related to energy sector impacts on air quality.
      • Support Regulatory Applications Branch: through the review of industry applications and provide risk-based recommendations for approvals and licences.
      • Support the Regulatory Compliance Branch: through performing analysis identifying contributions from industry to air quality exceedance events, supporting methane reduction initiatives, and development of decision support tools for inspectors.
      • Support Regulatory Enhancement Branch: through analysis of the implications on air quality of regulatory instruments including forecasting emissions and outcomes under air quality regulatory options and mitigation alternatives.
      • Work with Alberta Geological Survey scientists using earth observation techniques which contribute to air quality monitoring, modelling, and decision support.
    • Collaborate with Government of Alberta in the development of provincial air quality modelling.
    • Lead technical aspects of projects within a multi-disciplinary project delivery group.
