    The Safe, Fair and Healthy Workplaces division provides legislation, policy development, and program delivery to ensure Alberta's workplaces are safe, fair, and healthy. Working with employers, labour associations, safety associations, and workers directly, this division ensures workplace-related legislation responds to the needs of Alberta's workers and employers and is responsible for compliance with several pieces of workplace-related legislation.

    The Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Delivery branch works with Alberta employers, worker groups and associations to educate, and enforce the OHS Act, Regulation and Code and is responsible for Alberta's overall OHS Policy Framework.

    The Specialized Professional Services Unit provides technical support and expertise for the development and delivery of compliance, legislative and prevention programs related to occupational health and safety.

    Role Responsibilities

    Our Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) team monitors compliance with the OHS Act, Regulation and Code. We work with health and safety associations and labour and employer groups as part of our prevention system to improve education and awareness about occupational health and safety. This prevents illnesses, injuries and fatalities in Alberta's workforce.

    The Specialized Professional Services Unit requires an Occupational Ergonomist to be a champion for continuously improving occupational disease and injury prevention programs, legislation and services.

    Working with the Senior Occupational Hygienist, the Occupational Ergonomist is a provincial specialist who provides technical input and support to projects, issues, publications, client responses, and ensures compliance and enforcement of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation and Code with an emphasis on ergonomic related hazards. The incumbent will also provide an ergonomic perspective and expertise in reviewing or interpreting the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act, Regulation and Code. They will assist in work to anticipate, identify, and assess ergonomic-related hazards and recommend control measures in all types of provincially regulated workplaces. The incumbent will provide professional ergonomic advice and technical analysis of issues to the Ministry and stakeholders in industry, labour, government and other agencies regarding a variety of ergonomic-related hazards.

    As Occupational Ergonomist, you will be responsible for the following key activities in the unit:

  • Support the OHS Delivery program.
  • Participate in the regular review and revision of the OHS legislation and policies relating to ergonomic issues, in accordance with the department regulatory review plan.
  • Develop explanation guides and publications, and develop policy interpretations relating to ergonomics.
