RESPONSIBILITIES
ThE intern is expected to support multiple projects in the Wood Manufacturing Innovation Centre of Excellence (ICE) in Vancouver, BC including the following projects and responsibilities:
Debarker Optimization

  • Organize/label/segment log images for debarker optimization
  • Write python or Matlab script for preprocessing images
  • Help make an inventory of our sensors and electronics, locations, manual, etc (Includes cameras, lasers, NIR, xray, etc.)
  • Assist in commercialization work for Drylog Detection System (User Manual, documentation, troubleshooting guide, testing)
Automated Scaling

  • Produce 3D conceptual designs for the portable log scaling scanner
  • Assist in assembly and testing of the scanning system 3D and vision scanning components
  • Scan sample logs to obtain full log datasets for post processing
Lumber Drying

  • Assist with laboratory kiln testing of different wood species using different drying conditions including loading/unloading kiln, sample measurements, data processing
General Collaboration

  • Collaborate with other FPInnovations teams and work groups (eg anticipated projects in our Sustainable Construction ICE)
  • Adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be registered in 2nd year or higher of a Bachelor's degree (University undergraduate) in engineering, or equivalent

SKILLS

  • Team player, curious and focused on improving the forest industry
  • Resilience, adaptability to changing priorities; our research is often weather dependent, which requires us to respond quickly to rapidly changing environments and circumstances
  • Positive attitude and open to learning
  • Selfmotivation and strong organizational skills
  • Experience writing Python and Matlab script would be considered an asset
  • Functional in English, (written and spoken).
