Are you an experienced leader with a strong background in highway signing? The Ministry of Transportation, Ontario (MTO) is seeking a leader for the Provincial Sign Shop who will oversee and manage program delivery operations, providing highway signing services for the ministry, partners and stakeholders.


As the Head of the Provincial Sign Shop, you will lead a team of professionals and manage the day-to-day operations of the Provincial Sign Shop.

This will require a strong understanding of the design, fabrication, and installation of highway signs, as well as the ability to coordinate with other stakeholders to ensure that our services meet their needs.


About Us:

The Provincial Sign Shop is part of MTO's Operations Division, Highway Operations Management Branch.

The sign shop is responsible for the design and fabrication of provincial signs for all provincial highways across the province, from Kenora to Ottawa and Windsor to Fort Severn.

Clients include MTO's Divisions, other ministries, municipalities, and the Federal Government.

What can I expect to do in this role?: Reporting to the Director, Highway Operations Management Branch, you will:

  • Plan, lead and manage the operations of the Provincial Sign Shop.
  • Ensure adherence to safe working practices and procedures.
  • Motivate staff and enlist a team approach.
  • Coordinate activities, direct operations, implement objectives, and set priorities.
  • Provide accurate, timely, and comprehensive information to senior management.
  • Develop and maintain internal and external stakeholder relationships to coordinate shared interests.

How do I qualify?:


Leadership and Management Skills:


  • You have leadership skills to guide and coach staff, set standards, evaluate performance, and hold staff accountable.
  • You have demonstrated skills to plan, lead, and coordinate the operation of a manufacturing sign shop facility.
  • You have knowledge of human resources practices, policies, directives and collective agreements in relation to recruitment, training and development and labour relations to support an inclusive and engaged team.
  • You have demonstrated the
    leadership behaviors, attributes and mindsets to lead the Ontario Public Service (OPS) into the future.

Technical Knowledge and Expertise:


  • You have knowledge and expertise regarding provincial highway signing requirements (i.e. ministry policies, procedures, practices, standards and guidelines, graphic design, layout, specifications, signing materials, production and automation technology).
  • You have knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS to ensure adherence to safe working practices and procedures.

Planning and Analytical Skills:


  • You have demonstrated skills to plan and promote the development of an ongoing business plan for signage operations.
  • You have demonstrated skills to coordinate and plan the delivery of a program, operation, service or project considering the strategy and mandate of the branch and ministry.
  • You can assess customer service delivery and monitor the need for improvements.
  • You have demonstrated skills to analyze and evaluate effective methods of realizing program objectives.

Communication Skills:


  • You have demonstrated skills to conduct presentation and tours of the sign shop to internal and external stakeholders, senior management and executive level management and to the broader public.
  • You can exchange information and provide technical advice to all levels of ministry staff.
  • You can maintain regular contact with client ministries and government agencies regarding orders, and recommends solutions to support cli
