The Burlington Humane Society (formerly called Animal Aid) has been a part of the Burlington community since 1974. It is a non-profit charity organization dedicated to helping the stray and abandoned animals in the Burlington area. We are extremely proud to be a no-kill shelter. Over the years, we have grown and we now have hundreds of active volunteers and several paid positions.


Job purpose
The Animal Care Supervisor (ACS) is a member of the Burlington Humane Society (BHS) management team.

Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for the care of all the animals at BHS.

The Animal Care Supervisor leads the animal care team [Animal Care Workers (ACW) and the Adoption Counselors (AC)] and ensures that the welfare of all the animals at BHS are being provided for.

The ACS is also responsible for all the inventory of animal supplies and administration requirements for the care of the animals.


Duties and responsibilities

Communication Responsibilities:

  • Discuss all approved surrender intakes with appropriate staff
  • Ensure all paperwork is completed and updated
  • Prepare reports as required (for ED, board meetings)
  • Attend and occasionally lead morning staff briefings
  • Assist ED in organizing staff meetings
  • Write articles for newsletter
  • Be the animal spokesperson for media requests
  • Prepare and record stories for the Burlington Humane Podcast
  • Ensure clear and concise communication is uptodate for staff and volunteers.
  • Discuss with ACW's or ACs any concerns regarding volunteers. Assist staff in communicating with volunteers, as required.

Animal Care Management Responsibilities:

  • Plan medical care program for each animal upon arrival and ensure updates
  • Make all necessary arrangements for all authorized euthanasia
  • Meet with shelter vet and ensure instructions are followed
  • Ensure appropriate signage and information is accurate for each animal
  • Work with ED and ACs in efforts to relocate difficult animals if necessary
  • Complete large intakes and communicate with other rescues for transfers

Canine Care Responsibilities:

  • Arrange and attend appropriate independent evaluations for dog surrenders
  • Ensure behaviourist discusses proper behavioural rating system, recommends enrichment and special training for problem dogs
  • Ensure all dog walker volunteers are properly trained and rated as to their knowledge and ability in handling dogs
  • Arrange followup dog behavioural evaluations, including special training as needed

Feline Care Responsibilities:

  • Discuss with ACW staff and arrange for appropriate cat room configurations and enrichment for each room and/or individual cat
  • Determine care program for each cat/kitten.

Foster Care Responsibilities:

  • Identify animals needing fostering and communicate to ACs to arrange appropriate foster
  • Discuss with ACs any issues with foster animals and foster volunteers

Administration Responsibilities:

  • Process veterinary bills
  • Order food, adoption kits, cat litter, medical supplies as required
  • Update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) re: animals, including care, Feed and Clean, Dog Walking
  • Discuss with ED and ACs any special adoptions (health or behavioural issues) and create contracts
  • Maintain relationships with animal clinics, discuss clinic pricing, contracts, etc.
  • Ensure protocols are in place to be followed by ACWs and ACs in ACS absence
  • Coordinate with Happy Tails for pictures
Computer Related Responsibilities

  • Contribute and maintain BHS social media platforms
  • Maintain Petfinder profile online
Other Duties

  • Assists ED in interview, hiring and training of Animal Care Team
  • Monitor inventory and stock for animal needs
  • Create animal promotion material i.e. feature boards, pictures, info and ads on reception TV
  • First point of contact in the event of animal emergencies, emergency calls from clinics and security company
  • Organize special events (adoptathons, rabies and microchip clinics)
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong team building and leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail a must
  • Demonstrated experience with administrative procedures, processes and standards
  • Veterinary Technician certification
  • Ability to use a variety of software programs (Microsoft Office Suite, ShelterLuv, WordPress)
  • Selfdirected with ability to organize, plan, prioritize and multitask
  • Strong social media management skills.
  • Flexible, adaptable and responsive to change
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Understanding of animal welfare and humane societies.
  • Standard First Aid/CPR
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID19
