Job Summary
- Dalhousie University's Psychology and Neuroscience Department is the top Psychology and Neuroscience Department in Atlantic Canada. The department is oneofakind and was established for research into what makes humans and animals behave the way that they do, as well as to understand the structure and function of the nervous system. Reporting to the Departmental Administrator, the Animal Care Supervisor is responsible for the daytoday operation of the Studley Animal Care Facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Schedule and monitor daily work assignments of staff including daily checks of all animal rooms. Provide feedback to staff, and monitor and report on progress to staff and Department Administrator.
- Assign animal housing space to approved investigators, ordering and inventory of supplies as needed, liaising with various internal and external stakeholders to ensure the care and safety of the animals and facility.
- Responsible for the inspection and care of a small number of animal rooms, which includes daily cleaning, checking for adequate food/water supplies, monitor light cycle, temperature and humidity as per research criteria, isolate sick animals and refer to veterinarian, and perform treatments, as required.
- Advise staff on procedures and assist with problems, provide students/faculty with information on techniques, meet with researchers and investigators. Make recommendations to researchers or veterinarian regarding animal care and health.
- Complete weekly animal inventory and prepare quarterly cost recovery billing for researchers who house animals in the facility.
Note
Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus.
Required Qualifications
- Professional diploma such as Veterinary Technician or an equivalent such as a Registered Animal Health Technician, Registered Veterinary Technician or a Registered Laboratory Animal Technician, or experience working in a veterinary setting and/or animal research facility.
- Must possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral, along with sound judgment and ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Excellent organizational skills and tact when dealing with confidential information.
