- Initiate referral submission adequacy review as first point of contact for referrals intake while maintaining and growing regulator, proponent and third‑party consultant relations.
- Manage multiple referral files while maintaining response timelines and providing professional quality written materials and work products.
- Analyse technical reports to identify potential issues and make recommendations to the project to reduce adverse impacts.
- Coordinate with department staff to ensure the accurate and timely preparation, facilitation and response of consultations and permit letters to all referral applications received.
- Consistent maintenance and organization of referral, consultation and permit documents to maintain records/documents to preserving knowledge.
- Participate in meetings, conduct field site visits, and interact with technical representatives of proponents and regulators.
- Data entry of past consultation and referral records into the Connect Portal and other databases.
- Development of internal policy related to consultation and permitting as needed.
- Draft reports, letters, monthly community newsletter referral updates, and other written responses as directed.
- Draft briefing notes and provide recommendations to Executive Director on issues relating to environmental assessment permits, proposed projects and environmental monitoring activities.
- Provide guidance, advice and support on land management legislation regulations, leasing matters, policies and practices.
- Provide interdepartmental support as required from time to time as directed by management.
- Maintains confidentiality as per policy guidelines.
- Diploma or degree, or equivalent experience, in resource management, GIS, land management, environmental studies, physical or biological science, ecology or other environmental science, as well as First Nations studies and/or Aboriginal Law.
- 1 Year of experience as a Referral Coordinator or in related field
- Sound knowledge of Referral consultation processes
- Understanding of Provincial and Federal regulatory policies and processes
- Ability to undertake field work under varying terrain and weather conditions
- Experience and knowledge in the use and application of GIS and GPS systems
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including a strong ability in report writing, including excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as be a cooperative and contributing member in a team environment
- Self‑motivation with the capability to balance competing priorities and manage ambiguous situations
- Interpersonal skills – must have the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interests, including regulators, proponents, other First Nations and community members.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills including a strong ability in report writing.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as be a cooperative and contributing member in a team environment.
- Preference may be given to candidates with familiarity of Canadian environmental legislation actsand demonstrated skills and experience in professional cultural resources management report writing and mapping.
- Knowledge of and experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Access & Excel) and proficient data management skills.
- Basic knowledge of Coast Tsimshian culture and practices.
- Previous experience working for First Nation's an asset.

The Lax Kw'alaams Lands, Resources and Stewardship Department has an exciting and immediate opening for a Full‑Time Referral Coordinator. As a key member of the team, this role is responsible for providing Advocacy and representation, collaboration and engagement, culture and heritage stewardship, referral response, education, research and program development to uphold, protect and celebrate Lax Kw'alaams Rights and Title held over its lands and waters.
The Referral Coordinator is responsible for leading consultation and to reduce adverse industrial and anthropologic impacts on Lax Kw'alaams Rights and Title. Referrals will be processed as per data management policies and practises and checked for completeness prior to the implementation of Lax Kw'alaams referral assessment that incorporates three inimitable processes (technical, cultural and heritage, Guardian). Each assessment contributes to the consultation record and together formulate a means to evaluate and determine potential immediate and future impacts on Lax Kw'alaams Rights and Title. Through the use of referral tools and process review, the Referral Coordinator provides professionally informed, culturally based, permit and project referral responses to regulators and proponents.
