Position Description:


purpose


The purpose of this position is to install and maintain network equipment as well as address problems, provide corrective actions, and employ proactive practices to achieve improved efficiencies or increased cost-effectiveness of network configurations.

Problems addressed by this position generally involved multiple network devices and corrective actions require complex solutions involving more than one component.


accountability
The Network Specialist / Analyst has basic accountability for:

  • Maintaining awareness and an understanding of current and emerging network infrastructure technologies;
  • Facilitating discussions with users in regard to technology problems they are experiencing, explaining the nature and solution of the problem, and advising improved operational practises, as appropriate;
  • Using knowledge of diagnostic equipment and knowledge of network components to isolate problems and determine if the problem is related to the network hardware;
  • Investigating problems and determining corrective actions using the most appropriate methods such as contacting internal and external stakeholders and/or researching appropriate written documentation; and,
  • Correcting problems that are related to local area and wide area network hardware.
The Network Specialist / Analyst - Level II has specific accountability for:

  • Using knowledge of network hardware, protocols and operating system software to isolate network problems and determine the necessary action required to correct the problem;
  • Correcting problems that are related to network hardware, protocols and/or operating system software;
  • Understanding device operation in various configurations to develop recommendations for small to midscale (school or department based) environments; and,
  • Managing midsized projects that are limited in scope.

major responsibilities

The Network Specialist/Analyst position has basic responsibility for:

  • Installing and configuring data communication equipment in both Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) environments within both school and administrative buildings.
  • Operating diagnostic equipment relating to analysing network performance and network protocols. Compiling information and preparing reports resulting from the testing and monitoring initiatives to provide a summary description of network anomalies or as a method of creating a reference point of network performance.
  • Responding to network trouble calls, determining causes of problems and implementing technical solutions.
  • Recommending and implementing modifications and changes to existing defined methods to increase efficiencies.
  • Assessing compatibility and recommending devices for optimum integration of various network hardware devices.
  • Liaising with staff from schools, departments and I.T.S., providing information, advice and training related to implementing local and wide area network configurations.
  • Researching current literature and manuals to maintain an awareness of existing and emerging network infrastructure technologies.
  • Performing cost analysis of using various network infrastructure devices based on a school or department's needs. Advising and assisting in planning network upgrades and/or changes from one system to another.
  • Performing wireless LAN site surveys to determine appropriate designs. Consulting with schools on the outcome of the survey and presenting potential design scenarios.
  • Coordinating network device installations with schools, departments, and external parties related to specific development and expansion projects.
The Network Specialist/Analyst - Level II position has specific responsibility for:

  • Evaluating new equipment in a lab environment for compatibility with existing systems or to isolate problems with faulty equipment.
  • Discussing problems, corrective actions and proactive practises to achieve improved efficiencies or increased costeffectiveness of network configurations. Problems addressed by this position generally involve more than one network device and corrective actions require complex solutions involving more than one component.
  • Installing network devices, ensuring appropriate network configuration. When necessary, modifying configurations to align appropriately with schoolbased routers.
  • Managing midsized network projects where a clearly defined role has to be established. Projects are limited in scope, and resources encompass many sites. Client and third party interactions require tact.
  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned to meet goals and objectives.
