Role


Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, First Nations, Métis and Inuit Division, the Executive Director, Métis, Inuit, Rural and Urban is responsible for a diverse portfolio of Metis, Inuit, Rural and Urban Initiatives.

You will lead the ministry in designing an educational system that is inclusive and understanding of the past experiences students have been faced due to the impact and fallout of the residential school system.

As the Executive Director you will provide advice to the Assistant Deputy Minister and Executive Team to help shape the strategic direction of the department on Indigenous issues and will work with the division ministry and staff to collaborate, develop, and build strong relationships with Indigenous communities.

You will demonstrate success by ensuring that the grant processes are maintained in accordance with ministry and government requirements.

This role performs the following tasks and responsibilities:

  • You will lead, develop, and execute strategic plans to guide two separate units which represent a broad spectrum of programs and initiatives to enhance the success rate of Métis, Inuit, Rural and Urban students in Alberta.
  • You will focus and participate in the negotiations of formal agreements and oversee the implementation and funding programs and grants for Métis, Inuit, Rural and Urban students.
  • You will work with the federal government, other provinces, territories, and Indigenous governments and organizations, to develop national and regional strategies to address Métis, Inuit, Rural and Urban Education issues and related associations like the Métis Nations of Alberta Friendship Centers, to enhance the relationship between the Government of Alberta and Indigenous peoples and communities.
  • You will liaise with the provincial and federal school bodies to increase Métis, Inuit, Rural and Urban engagement, and success in the Western school system, and you will work crossministry to influence the consideration of Indigenous students with a focus on Métis education.

Qualifications
University graduation in education, supplemented by six years progressively responsible related experience; this experience must include:

  • Proven ability to build and maintain successful relationships with internal and external government stakeholders, Métis, Inuit, Rural and Urban communities and/or other related associations and organizations.
  • Political acumen and excellent communication skills to provide sound advice, consultation, and influence to provide recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Previous experience negotiating and implementing formal agreements.
  • Experience leading monthly forecasting and budget planning.
  • You have a great understanding of the Alberta Education system and experience amalgamating Indigenous world views into the western school system.
  • You have distinguished yourself as a strategic leader with a reputation for empowering, mentoring, and developing capacity within your teams
  • You use your exceptional collaboration skills and a systems approach to deliver results on ministry priorities.
  • You are committed to developing strategic and collaborative partnerships with internal and external government stakeholders and you will ensure that the Indigenous perspective is represented.
Salary

$4,934.42 to $6,484.75 bi-weekly ($128,788.36 to $/169,251.98 year)
