This position is in the Economic Analysis Unit, where you would join a team of policy analysts, economists and other statisticians.

What can I expect to do in this role?: You will:

  • Provide for the collection, manipulation, technical analysis and presentation of statistical data in support of various program and policy initiatives related to agriculture, food and rural issues.
  • Design and revise data systems for the purposes of collecting, processing, analyzing, evaluating, and reporting data, including spatial analysis and modelling.
  • Provide statistical analysis and evaluate the results against identified targets/measures.
  • Summarize/compile and interpret complex data for use by the ministry, external clients, and other organizations.
  • Research and analyze data and trends to provide recommendations as they relate to issues affecting relevant sectors (e.g. rural Ontario), and ministry policy and programs.
  • Provide advice and recommendations, and assist with policyrelated duties to assess the impact of various policy options, as directed.

How do I qualify?:


Technical Knowledge and Skills:


  • You are diligent and accurate in extracting and checking data to ensure quality of economic and quantitative analysis and have the political acuity to support developing appropriate recommendations that enable decisionmaking for senior leaders.
  • You have knowledge of mathematics, statistical analysis methodologies and procedures, as well as statistical theory and principles to perform a wide range of statistical functions, including designing data collection processes and methodologies, analyzing complex data, interpreting interrelationships, etc.
  • You are experienced in structured data analysis, data modelling, database design, programming languages and spatial analysis to develop specialized map products, build data, conduct modelling analysis, and data interpretation.

Analytical, Research and Problem-Solving Skills:


  • You have strong research, quantitative, analytic and evaluative skills to obtain, interpret, and analyze data that supports policy and program development.
  • You have business and political acuity, and selfawareness to manage contentious issues.
  • You have effective problemsolving skills in relation to program/policy initiatives, providing data and analysis to support evidencebased policy development.
  • You have data management skills to organize, process, analyze and extract data in relational databases, manage information/results, and ensure quality control.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:


  • You possess excellent oral communication skills with the ability to translate technical material into a format that is understood by nontechnical staff, management and stakeholders.
  • You have the demonstrated written communication skills to prepare exceptional quality statistical/analytical reports, interpretative opinions, publications, and briefing materials for senior management and the ministry.
  • You have interpersonal, consultation and negotiation skills to encourage cooperation and collaboration in support of datagathering initiatives; and work closely with other ministry staff to identify/share trends and/or issues, and inform collaborative policy development.
