9 Story Media Group is seeking an HR Business Partner for our Toronto studio.

Working in our dynamic and creative business environment, the HR Business Partner will be responsible for employee relations, performance management, facilitation and special projects for 9 Story Media Group / Brown Bag Films HR team.


Reporting to:
Vice President, Human Resources - North America

Purpose:

  • Connect employees and management with HR peoplefocused programs and processes, and support managers and employees at critical periods of the employee life cycle including onboarding, offboarding.
  • Address complex workplace issues including like performance concerns, documentation of roles, accommodation requests, extended absences, harassment, and discrimination.

Delivery:
What you produce

  • Employee correspondence and documentation including Role Profiles, Performance Improvement Plans, Leave of Absence Plans and Accommodation Plans
  • Investigation reports
  • Employee, management, and business insights in the form of advice, exit interviews, and reports

Measurements:

  • SMART Plans
  • Effectiveness of Plans in reaching intended outcomes
  • Clear and differentiated Role Profiles
  • Timely and accurate payroll submissions
  • Delivery of HR project milestones
  • Feedback from managers, employees and executive leadership

Key Responsibilities

  • What you are regularly responsible for doing
  • Facilitates Onboarding/Offboarding of employees including: First day orientation, exit interviews, 1:1 meetings with employees that have been laid off or contracts have completed.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for HR queries from employees and line managers on areas such as employment contracts, performance management, HR policies, referring and escalating more complex issues to other members of HR team.
  • Manage maternity and family related leave processes and issues.
  • Coach line managers on performance management and difficult conversations.
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues including Performance Improvement Plans, Accommodation requests, Harassment claims and investigations, wrongful termination, and human rights violation claims.
  • Align Role Profiles with functional and company goals and objectives, and with comparable roles in the organization.
  • Work with VP HR, HR Operations and functional executives to develop annual human capital plans.
  • Proactively share upcoming changes in employment law, the business and business needs with other team members.

  • HR projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure a strong understanding of laws and regulations to help the company stay in compliance.
  • Work is done independently and in consultation with VP HR and other members of HR Team.

Key Requirements

Knowledge:

  • Strong knowledge of Ontario employment law with general knowledge of broader U.S and Canadian employment law.
  • Knowledge of legal requirements related to daytoday management of employees, reducing legal risks, and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • CHRL preferred.

Experience:


  • Breadth of experience of working in HR across 35 employee lifecycles.
  • Providing HR support in a busy, fast
- paced environment.

  • Experience building relationships with stakeholders at all levels within organisation.
  • Previous payroll experience desirable.
  • Assessment of unusual circumstances and use sophisticated analytical and problemsolving techniques are used to identify cause, resolve and assess a wide range of issues in creative ways and variations in approach may be recommended.
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Interpersonal communication skills: Active listening skills, conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to observe and operate within evolving company circumstances and culture
  • Ability to coach managers
