This role provides advanced analytical, data driven, and programming expertise to support the development, documentation, validation, monitoring, reporting, and implementation of AIRB models.

Supports the research and development of quantitative risk modeling methodologies and related strategies in support of the management of risks arising from business/group portfolios and products.

Applies knowledge of analytics algorithms and technologies to develop forward looking models and analytic solutions that ensure risks are properly identified, understood and risk related strategies are enabled.

Summarizes statistical findings, draws business conclusions, and presents actionable business recommendations used in the management of risks and related activities e.g.

associated internal controls; enterprise-wide stress testing and scenario analysis; capital modelling; valuations.

Drives innovation through the development of data products that can be leveraged across the organization and establishes best practices as well influences data governance guidelines and policies.


  • Responsible for the endtoend model development activities for the suite of BMO Retail credit risk AIRB (PD/LGD/EAD) models, including but not limited to model requirements gathering, data extraction, data exploratory analysis, scoring model development, segmentation development, parameter calibration, capital impact assessment, documentation, and supporting implementation and UAT
  • Work with stakeholders to identify the business requirements, understand the distinct problems, and the expected outcome and models
  • Conduct parameter calibration and recalibration of the corresponding AIRB parameters
  • Support ongoing model production and trouble shoot when issues arise
  • Set up and support ongoing model monitoring, including annual review, trigger review, revalidation
  • Support model review activities conducted by regulators, audit, and Model Risk and compliance functions.
  • Manage changes in the model environment, including but not limited to new business initiatives, source data, system, and technology upgrades.
  • Develop analytical solutions, summarize statistical findings, portfolio trend, credit migration reports and draw conclusions and present actionable business recommendations. Present findings & recommendations in a simple, clear way to drive action.
  • Provide modeling and analytical expertise to stakeholders involved in the development, documentation, validation, implementation, and monitoring of models
  • Build effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders. Ensure alignment between stakeholders. Provide specialized consulting, analytical and technical support.
  • Work independently and regularly handle nonroutine situations.
  • Mentor and coach junior staff

Qualifications:


  • Master/PhD degree in statistics, mathematics, or other quantitative fields.
  • Advanced knowledge of credit risk modeling methodology, capital methodology and the mathematics around quantifying portfolio loss distributions
  • At least 5 years previous work experience in a credit risk modeling role using SAS, Python or other statistical software
  • Strong UNIX/LINUX and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) skills
  • Ability to relate analytical and capital expertise to business problems, formulate business recommendations and communicate effectively to a nonanalytical audience
  • Knowledge of big data analytics and machine learning
  • Knowledge of bank products and financial services
  • Experience of mentoring, coaching and leading analytical team is a plus
  • Excellent time and resource management skills, flexibility and resourcefulness to interface and collaborate with internal and external groups
