About this Role
The Outdoor Education Guide is responsible for leading or co-leading Outdoor Education excursions for students from SK - Grade 7.
Working with the Outdoor Education Coordinator and classroom teachers SK - Grade 7, the Guide will supervise or co-lead day and overnight outdoor learning experiences throughout the year.
Responsibilities will include designing, organizing, and implementing excursions and conducting risk assessments. It will involve coordinating trip logistics and communicating with teachers, students, and families.As well, t will involve coordinating and working with teachers and the Junior School Director and Assistant Director to run meaningful programs that connect curricular and co-curricular programming outdoors.
In addition, this individual may be asked to support Senior School Outdoor Education Programming.Outdoor Education Responsibilities
Lead and co-lead outdoor excursions with students (Grades SK - Grade 7)
Develop, monitor, and support clear and high standards of risk management and preparedness
Cultivate students' curiosity, confidence, growth mindset, grit, leadership and well-being through dynamic Outdoor Education excursions
Cultivate students' competencies related to self-care, nutrition, safety, and play in the outdoors
Cultivate understanding, action, and reflection related to environmental sustainability
May assist the Outdoor Education Coordinator with developing a scope and sequence for Outdoor Education programming and measures for evaluating and improving quality of the program
Collaborate with teachers to deepen experiential and Outdoor Education learning
Coordinate with Director of Junior School as needed for excursions and collaborate with classroom teachers to support an age-appropriate Outdoor Education ProgramDevelop and facilitate student experiential learning cycle
Manage the use, repair, and ongoing replacement of Outdoor Education equipment
Other Duties & Specific Tasks
Guide day trips for Little and Junior Schools and support overnight on occasional camps & excursions
Provide support, education, and training to staff/faculty on Outdoor Education, and Safety and Emergency Preparedness related to Outdoor Education experiences
May assist with serving as a Lead or Assistant Guide in Senior School excursions alongside the Outdoor Education Coordinator
Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
A passion for teaching and learning with children ages 4-18 & for the outdoors
Experience leading outdoor programs and wilderness excursions with students
Experience working in various outdoor fields (i.e. kayak or ski guide)
Excellent organizational, communication, trust-building, and problem-solving skills
Competency in wide range of wilderness skills
Demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities with experience managing small to large Outdoor Education programs
Calm, diplomatic, thoughtful when dealing with challenges
Skilled in outdoor excursion emergency management
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all stakeholders (students, parents, staff, faculty, administrators, third-party providers)
Sound judgment and decision-making skills
Highly developed abilities in the areas of self-awareness, self-management, social agility, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and empathy
Fun
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Education
BC Teachers Certificate
Outdoor Experiential Education courses or certification is required
Certifications in outdoor-related pursuits (i.e.kayaking, canoeing, avalanche, hiking) are strongly encouraged
BC Class 2 or 4 driver's license is an asset
Current and advanced wilderness first aid certificate
5 years of experience in outdoor education teaching is an asset
