About the role:
This an exciting role that require excellent leadership and passion for building safe and resilient communities.

John Howard's Carling Supportive Housing Program is 40 units for men, woman and gender diverse individuals who have been experiencing chronic homelessness.

The program provides semi-independent accommodation and support to individuals age 18 and over.


As a support worker your role will be to help foster a community of inclusion, safety, and belonging for residents while supporting the case management team with the implementation of care plans, recreational activities, daily programming, and other engagement opportunities with the residents.


Support Worker Responsibilities:


  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment while fostering a sense of community and connection.
  • Distribution of resident's daily medications
  • Daily food preparation and distribution
  • Ensure that resident care plans are adhered to
  • Work collaboratively with caseworkers to maintain and update resident care plans
  • Maintain professional development through participation in relevant training, participation in supervision and through Support Worker development plans

Program/Building Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily life skills building sessions
  • Intervene and provide support to client crisis's and basic needs
  • Implement recreation events and meaningful daily activities.
  • Support the residents to follow rules and expectations of building and program
  • Participate in resident case conferences and team meetings
  • Assist in maintaining a positive environment for residents and colleagues
  • Complete daily housekeeping and report any building deficiencies
  • Ensure a comprehensive understanding of the Carling Supportive Housing Operations Manual and adhere to all protocols associated with that manual
  • Ensure a comprehensive understanding of the policies and procedures manual for the John Howard Society of Ottawa and adhere to all protocols associated with P&P
  • Adhere to all additional security and/or safety protocols associated with Carling Supportive Housing.
  • Facilitate excellent collaborative relationships with program colleagues and provide coverage when required
  • Complete any follow up with the Coordinator as it relates to residents/building safety and emergency preparedness planning
  • Actively participate in program evaluation by completing necessary processes and documentation
  • Perform other duties as may be occasionally requested.

Report Writing/ Administrative

  • Maintain daily log notes on SharePoint
  • Produce additional written reports, and records as required
  • Submit necessary statistical information as required

Qualifications:


Education:


  • University Degree/College Diploma in a Social Services program OR working towards completion of one

Preferred Experience:


  • Experience working with diverse populations. In particular those experiencing homelessness, addictions, or varying mental health needs.
  • Experience in housing/residential setting
  • Experience working in a Harm Reduction environment
  • Experiences working as part of an Interdisciplinary team

Preferred Knowledge and Skills:


  • Competency engaging and establishing rapport with clients experiencing mental health and substance use issues.
  • Competency using crisis management skills if required
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (Residential Tenancies Act and Mental Health Act) as well as clear understanding of operating within agency policies and procedures
  • Basic counselling skills to support interactions, and possible case plan t
