Purpose:


As part of the Faculty of Graduate Studies, Graduate Student Wellness Services strives to provide a range of responsive mental health and wellness services that support graduate students in their academic and personal endeavors.


The purpose of the Graduate Student Counsellor is to help graduate students realize, develop, and fulfill their personal potential to maximally benefit from their graduate studies experience.

This is achieved through the provision of direct service in the form of single-session, short-term individual counselling, group counselling, and workshops.

Support to the larger graduate student community at York including faculty and staff, occurs through consultation, training, and outreach.


This position requires a service-focused professional who treats members of the community with respect, values their time, strives for personal best, and collaborates to improve service experiences for all.


Education:

Masters degree in Clinical/Counselling Psychology or related field or a Master of Social Work Degree.

Registration with the College of Psychologists of Ontario, the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, or the College of Registered Psychotherapists.


Experience:

A minimum of five years demonstrated counselling effectiveness in a human service agency or counselling setting.


Skills:

Demonstrated skill in the training and supervision of graduate level counselling practicum students. Organizational and administrative skills with emphasis on the facilitation and evaluation of interpersonal communication in groups. Knowledge of community resources and the consultative skills to facilitate access.


Has a genuine desire to improve the service experience for all stakeholders by treating individuals with respect, valuing their time, striving for personal best, and collaborating towards continuous improvement.


Additional Notes:

The role involves intensive active listening to understand and respond to the client effectively. This position requires the counsellor to respond to emotionally charged situations. The counsellor may be exposed to adversarial confrontations directed towards them personally due to the nature of the role.

This role is also required to respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively where the safety and well-being of all concerned is paramount.

Compensation:


York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.

Employees will receive the grid adjustment and depending on performance, eligible permanent employees may move to the next step of the grid and may receive a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
