Description

Provide guidance to the operations of the Hollow Metal Shop to meet the fabrication requirements of company projects relative to metal doors and frames including door hardware preparation, door lite preparation, customizing of doors and fabrication of custom frames and screens.

Overseeing the layout, welding and fabrication are the significant components of this job, while supervising a small staff team.

  • Accomplishes human resource objectives by selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising job contributions; adhering to policies and procedures with support from Manager and/or Human Resources.
  • Meets Metal Shop operational standards by contributing information to operational plans and reviews; implementing production, productivity, quality, and customerservice standards; resolving problems; identifying Metal Shop system improvements.
  • Meets Metal Shop financial standards by monitoring expenditures; measures production/outputs; identifying variances; implementing corrective actions in cooperation with Operation Manager(s).
  • Moves inventory by scheduling materials to be moved to and from shop; coordinating inventory transfers with related divisions/departments.
  • Ensures effective execution of projects from receiving request to fabrication to delivery of product by working closely with division/departments (Purchaser, Project Coordinator and Project Coordinator Supervisor and Shipping).
  • Maintains storage area by organizing floor space; adhering to storage design principles; recommending improvements.
  • Ensures a secure Metal Shop by turning alarms on; testing systems etc., as required.
  • Keeps equipment operating by enforcing operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; requiring preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.
  • Completes all administrative tasks relative to the Metal Shop Operation, including but not limited to processing shop orders, validating shop & purchase orders, ensuring appropriate inventory of stock in coordination with Purchaser etc.
  • Effectively deploys staff resources in the Metal Shop operations and the totality of the company as required.
  • Assist in welding and fabrication as a role model and to maintain schedule of work as required.

This includes, but not limited to:

preparing metal doors and frames including door hardware preparation (locks, hinges, strikes, closers, etc); door lite preparation (cutting opening, kit installation, glazing etc); installing reinforcements, custom sizing of doors, and metal work of frames & screens.


  • Remains knowledgeable and aware of all applicable fire rating rules and regulations with regard to our inhouse labelling program.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Personally practices safe working procedures and adheres to safety regulations of the Ontario Occupational Health and safety Act, along with ensuring staff adherence.
  • Interact with colleagues, customers and suppliers in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Contributes to the overall team and company by performing miscellaneous jobrelated or unrelated duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Postsecondary education in the trades or practical work experience of 23 years in a related industry (e.g. Welding, Fabrication, Production, Mechanical or Construction).
  • A demonstrated understanding of the technical aspects of a Metal Shop operation the work, the processes and procedures. This may be gained from previous work as a Metal Shop Technician or a like trade.
  • Effective communicator with strong speaking, writing and listening skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability.
  • Knowledgeable and aware of all applicable fire rating rules and regulations with regard to inhouse labelling program.
