Hours of Work: - 3 hours per week

***Reporting to the Producer, with support from the Programming Coordinator, the Ice Skating Instructor will offer skating lessons throughout the Bentway's winter season to a variety of community groups, including the general public and to newcomer communities. Similar to previous years, these lessons are structured as drop-in and in a repeatable format each week, focused on offering basics skating skills to beginners. Skate lessons, each lasting about 1 hour in length, will be offered to the public for free with online pre-registration each week. We typically have groupings of about 6 skaters per instructor, with a potential total of 4-5 groups per lesson.

Groups are divided based on general age:
years old, and 12 and up. Half of our public skating loop will be sectioned off during these lessons to ensure safety.

EVENT DATES

Lessons will take place Tuesday and Thursday evenings from January 10, 2023 to February 16, 2023, with the potential of additional "special event" dates added during the period.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructors must adhere to basic safety standards and practices by:
Ensuring that all participants wear protective helmets during the lessons.
Ensuring that all participants have signed liability waivers before the lessons.
Ensuring that any participants who exhibit signs of intoxication from alcohol and/or other substances are removed from the lessons.
Ensuring that any participants who exhibit generally unsafe behavior are removed from the lessons.
Ensuring that all participants have a basic level of skate proficiency.
Ensuring that the participants follow the capacity limit per instructor during the lessons.

REQUIREMENTS:

Instructors are required to have:

Valid CanSkate or equivalent instructor certification.
The primary series of COVID19 vaccinations.
Experience or knowledge of facilitating outdoor, informal skating lessons to both youth and adults.
Standard First Aid training considered an asset.

ABOUT THE BENTWAY

Since Phase 1 of The Bentway - under the Gardiner from Strachan Ave to Fort York Blvd, on the grounds of Fort York National Historic Site - opened in 2018, it has proven to be a vital backyard park, a cultural platform for artist experimentation, and a growing creative movement.

In partnership with the City of Toronto, The Bentway is creating a network of public spaces, developing a cohesive vision for wayfinding, and reconnecting the waterfront to the downtown core.
