Description

OVERVIEW
The Physician Assistant (PA) is a unregulated health care provider who works under the supervision of a registered physician.

The PA supports the physician as the principle medical-decision maker and the supervising physician is responsible for the direction of the PAs' activities.

All PA activity will take place within the physician-patient relationship, whether actual or imminent.

The goal of PAs is to provide health care to patients having first established a partnership of trust with the supervising physician that is then extended to the patients of the physician's practice.

Under the supervision of a physician, PAs meet the needs of the patients by treating immediate illness, guiding patients through recovery, advising them on healthier choices, and educating them on disease prevention.

Primary Responsibilities

PAs are highly skilled providers that have the knowledge, skills, and experience to work as part of a physician led team in a variety of clinical settings.

In general, PAs participating in the hospital
demonstration projects will have the skills and experience to deal with medical emergencies,
specialized care and everyday health care needs. Depending on the agreement between the
physician and the PA, activities may include such tasks as:

  • conducting patient interviews
- taking patient histories
- completing physical examinations
- performing selected diagnostic and therapeutic interventions
- ordering and interpreting patient laboratory and radiological results
- counselling on preventive health care
- other task within the supervising physician's scope of practice that the physician deems the PA qualified to complete

PAs are unregulated practitioners who do not work autonomously.
All the work of a PA is delegated by a physician either directly or through a medical directive.

The PA willbe working within the neurology division doing initial consultation assessments, and triaging patient seen for the Out-Patient clinic.
