POSITION OVERVIEW:


This is skilled manual work involving the maintenance and repair of the City water system but also including sanitary and storm sewer systems if required.

The incumbent operates, maintains, cleans, tests, repairs and adjusts fire hydrants, pumps and related equipment and repairs or replaces water or sanitary and storm services.

This employee will also respond to service calls related to the utility services and connections.

In addition, the work involves supervising staff assigned to perform less complex aspects of the work such as operating a vacuum truck and performing skilled pipe-laying and pipefitting tasks.


This position is located in our Maple Ridge Operations Centre which is a front-line provider for public works services, including the management of the Roads and Fleet, Water Distribution, Sewage Disposal, Storm water management, Electrical Mechanical Systems and Procurement.

Operational focus is on health and safety of our citizens; protecting the large investment in the public works and underground infrastructure; protecting the environment; maintaining service levels; providing essential and convenience features, while providing these services at a minimum cost to taxpayers.


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:


  • Certification as an EOCP Water Distribution System Operator
  • Level 1 (in good standing)
  • High school graduation plus sound related experience OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Completion of Public Works courses such as Introduction to Public Works and Plan Reading would be considered an asset.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:


  • Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water or sewer systems maintenance and in pipelaying and pipefitting work as they related to the work performed and of the applicable safety standards and requirements.
  • Considerable knowledge of the water and sanitary and storm sewer systems of the functions of the Underground Operations Branch related to the work performed.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices and rules of safe and efficient operation of medium sized equipment.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine servicing and repair of related equipment.
  • Ability to comprehend and effectively carry out oral and written instructions with a minimum of supervision and to read and interpret plans, charts, diagrams and layouts.
  • Ability to layout, assist in and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in manual maintenance tasks and to direct the work of equipment operators and truck drivers and to ensure adherence to the appropriate safety standards.
  • Ability to maintain simple records relating to the work performed.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of power and hand tools and equipment common to maintenance work.
  • Sufficient physical strength and coordination to permit performance of heavy manual work outdoors in all weather.

LICENCES & CERTIFICATES:

Class 3 driver's license valid in the Province of British Columbia - with Air Brake Endorsement.

(_The City of Maple Ridge will allow the successful applicant to obtain their Class 3 within the first six (6) months of their employment if they do not already possess one.

However, a clean driving record is still a prerequisite)._


ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:


The successful applicant will be expected to participate in snow-clearing activities during normal working hours and after hours, as weather conditions require.
