Education and Licensing:


  • Registered Pharmacy Technician, in good standing with the Ontario College of Pharmacists
  • Graduate of an Accredited Pharmacy Technician College or Program, preferred

Experience:


  • Minimum two (2) years of recent practical experience as a pharmacy technician in a hospital setting, preferred
  • Minimum practical experience in Hazardous Sterile Intravenous Compounding, preferred, if not minimum one (1) year of recent practical experience in Nonhazardous Sterile Compounding in a hospital setting, preferred

Competencies:


  • General knowledge of MEDITECH Pharmacy modules
  • Knowledge of Pharmacy automation, including Automated Dispensing Units, Automated Narcotic Vault, Packagers and RIVA robot for Sterile Compounding
  • Familiarity with all processes and technology related to Hazardous Sterile Compounding and medication distribution
  • Sound problem solving, communications (oral and written), conflict resolution and decision making skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management

Position Summary:

  • The Pharmacy Technician is a member of the pharmacy team reporting to the Manager, Pharmacy Oncology.
  • The Pharmacy Technician participates in activities related to procurement, Sterile Intravenous compounding and dispensing, as well as collection of data to ensure safe medication practices.
  • The Pharmacy Technician works collaboratively with other members of the pharmacy team to ensure optimal patient care relating to medication preparation and delivery.

Responsibilities:


  • Performs tasks to ensure the correct medications are available for patients in a safe and timely manner.
  • Rotates through a number of technical positions, as required, including but not limited to: order entry, dispensing, unit dose cart fills, automated dispensing restocks, narcotic distributions, repackaging, sterile and nonsterile compounding, BPMH collection.
  • Responds to change in practices and increased volumes to improve efficiencies and cost effectiveness.
  • Uses, maintains and troubleshoots activities related to all pharmacy automation.
  • Participates on various teams and committee, as required, at both the hospital and departmental level.
  • Performs quality and safety audits, as required
  • Mentors and trains students from high school and colleges
  • Trains new technicians and pharmacists.
  • Works in a manner that is compliant with standards and information from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP), Ontario College of Pharmacists, and Accreditation Canada.
  • Other duties, as required.
