    Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for one permanent/full time position of Journeyperson Burner Mechanic/Oil Heat System Technician in Property, Fleet & Environment, Facility Maintenance & Operations.

    Working under the direction of the Supervisor, Building Operations, the incumbent is responsible for installation, repair and maintenance to Municipally-owned heating systems. Equipment includes industrial/residential style low-pressure boilers, domestic burners, hot air and hot water heating systems. The incumbent may be subject to call out on a rotational basis.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Routine preventative maintenance program, emergency repairs and necessary record keeping.
  • Installations, repairs, and troubleshooting including, but is not limited to, heating appliances, oil tanks, chimneys and associated equipment.
  • Performing all duties in accordance with legislative safety practices and procedures at all times to ensure their own safety and the safety of team members and staff.
  • Installs burner components such at thermostats, motors, piping and safety devices, and connect to fuel supply, ventilation and electrical systems in accordance with trade regulations.,
  • Operates hand, power, pneumatic activated tools and equipment in an effective and safe manner.
  • Maintains knowledge of all materials related to the trade and seeks out information on new materials that may be appropriate for use in educational/institutional buildings.
  • Makes recommendations to the Supervisor for future Infrastructure Maintenance Program upgrades.
  • Prepares reports, schedules surveys or recommendations as requested.
  • Completes work orders and time sheets daily on a computerized system.
  • Assist inspection of new facilities and renovations as required.
  • Assists the Supervisor in determining stock levels and types of heating system-related materials to be procured.
  • Assists Facility Operators in building operation with respect to heating-related matters and repairs.
  • Adequately stocks vehicle when a service vehicle is assigned.
  • Maintains cleanliness and basic service checks.
  • Works collaboratively with all other trades in the repair/service of heating components and related equipment.
  • Prepare reports on work performed and condition of facilities.
  • Advise clients regarding standards, safety features and maintenance of heating equipment.
  • Read and interpret drawings or specifications to determine work to be performed.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education & Experience:
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Must have a current & valid NS Dept. of Labour Burner Mechanic/Oil Heat System Technician Certification.
  • A valid NS Dept. of Labour Gas technician certificate is considered an asset.
  • Must have five years of previous related experience in all aspects of heating system repairs and maintenance.
  • Technical/Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
  • Must be reliable, punctual and have a good attendance record. Health must be compatible with job requirements.
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Must work well with minimum supervision.
  • Valid NS Class 5 Driver's license: provide current Driver Abstract.
  • Must have ability to pass a Security clearance and Child Abuse Registry.
  • Clear understanding of Facility Services' service delivery.
  • Clear understanding of HRM Procurement policies and delivery system.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and environmental regulation and practices.
  • Experience and knowledge of HRM relevant software, i.e., MS Word, Excel, SAP, Outlook, and computerized work order management software.
  • Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.
