Responsibilities:


Position Summary:
Academic Support and Engagement (ASE) supports incoming students through a variety of different avenues. Through participation in transition programming, students will engage and familiarize themselves with a variety of student supports and resources.

New Student Experience Leaders will assist with a variety of summer programming:


  • Summer Academic Orientation
  • Community Connections
  • Smart Start
New Student Experience Leaders will be key resources for students who participate in the programming. These leaders will support small groups, support individual students, and offer exemplary service to ensure a positive transition. New Student Experience Leaders will also support the development and implementation of key resources throughout the summer.


The goal of the Summer Academic Orientation Program (SAO) is to assist first year students with their transition to the university environment and culture.

This includes helping first year students select and register in first-year courses, learn more about services at Western, explore our campus, and meet members of our community before they begin school in September.

Community Connections is a two-day program comprised of intensive experiences on campus specifically designed for incoming first-year students. Leaders will support a group of students as they move through each day of programming.

Such programming will include a welcome, meals, and interactive sessions and activities - all focused on helping students form friendships, build a connection to the Western community, and be successful in starting their classes this Fall.

Leaders will also support the development of key digital resources that will allow these early connections to continue.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet, welcome and register participants upon arrival at Community Connections
  • Facilitate community building with an assigned group of student participants
  • Deliver large group presentations and discussions with parents and guests
  • Assist students with course selection, scheduling of their classes and helping to navigate student center
  • Lead tours of the campus and select residences
  • Provide a friendly and supportive environment for students and guests who attend
  • Connect students with various student organizations/communities on campus
  • Lend advice and share experiences to help students feel comfortable during this transition
  • Serve as wellrounded role models for incoming students
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment that helps participants develop an identity as Western community members
  • Display an energetic and enthusiastic attitude
  • Provide phone and electronic support for incoming students
  • Lead and present sessions based on Clifton Strengths and Life Design programming
