OBJECTIVES:


Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the Cook will provide healthy, balanced and enjoyable meals for up to 25 residential treatment clients of Homestead Alice M Walter House.

All responsibilities will be carried out while meeting the Canada's Food Guide, Public Health and Salvation Army Accreditation Standards.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Service Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and prepare all meals - includes: ordering, inventory, cooking, serving and clean up. Ensure meals are served according to scheduled meal times.
  • Ensure all kitchen functions meet Canada Food Guide, Public Health and Salvation Army Accreditation standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness of Kitchen equipment - grill, stove, and all utensils. Ensure that all areas of Kitchen Services such kitchen, fridge, freezers and storerooms/pantry are kept clean and orderly.
  • Create meal plans and order groceries and supplies.
  • Ready and prepare supplies for next day.
  • Responsible for storing Grocery Order. Consult with Program Coordinator if supplies are low.
  • Co-operate with Health Inspector during inspections - maintain all reports.
  • Supervise and monitor Clients on chore duty - completing any necessary reports.
  • Check all doors to ensure that area is secure at end of Shift. Lock any hazardous utensils away.
  • Be responsible for safety in Kitchen area - immediately report any accident or incident to Supervisor(s).

Organizational Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army and Homestead Alice M Walter House.
  • Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Engage in formal evaluation sessions with supervisor at 3, 6, and months during the first year of employment and annually thereafter.
  • Read and follow the Policy and Procedures Manual and the Employee Handbook.
  • As required and applicable to the position, suggestions are welcomed that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the management of the kitchen and meals for clients.
  • Represent the organization in a professional manner.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Fluent in written and spoken English
  • Post-Secondary School Graduate with Diploma or equivalent experience considered
  • Certification in Safe Food Handling required
  • Minimum five years related experience with some supervisory skills an asset
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety issues, Certification in First Aid/CPR and Certification in Food Handling
  • WHMIS training or willing to obtain
  • Good computer skills
  • Experience and ability developing menus for approval by the Program Coordinator

Hours of work:
This is a full time position - 35 hours per week. Monday to Friday, 10:30am - 5:30 pm (inclusive of a lunch break)
