    As part of HHS, the Engineering Department is an integral part of the support services, providing facilities maintenance services to the multiple Hospital sites. The Engineering staff is comprised of numerous and varied trades, including Stationary Engineers in the power plant, Electricians, Plumbers, Millwrights, Carpenters, Painters, etc., all contributing to the safe and efficient operation of the facilities. The department's goals can best be summarized as SERVICE EXCELLENCE.

    Position Summary

    The Control and Instrumentation Technician is responsible for the programming, start up, and servicing of all HVAC controls and BAS system components. This role requires extensive knowledge of building systems and services, electrical, pneumatic, and electronic interfaces, as well as control devices, with the expertise to interpret mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic control drawings. The duties and responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:


    • Performing daily system and operational checks, inspections, troubleshooting, testing, preventative maintenance, and repairs.

    • May create control programs, drawings, plans, and specifications, required for installation of new system components.

    • Develop, monitor, and maintain equipment and building time of day schedules as required.

    • Creating, editing, troubleshooting system software, graphics, points and programming as required.

    • Analyze and recommend system solutions for complex BAS/HVAC problems.

    • Provide technical input to the resolution of maintenance problems, material standards, purchase of new equipment and capital projects.

    • Identify energy saving opportunities through data and trend analysis.

    • Responsible for working with the Capital Development team and outside contractors with shutdowns, print review, attending commissioning orientation and all necessary training required on project completion.

    • Responsible to perform all required preventative maintenance work necessary to meet the hospital and code requirements.

    • Coordinates the activities of external service providers as directed.

    • Responsible for recognizing unsafe work practices and hazards in the work place, and for ensuring that these situations are corrected and, where corrective action cannot be taken, reports to his/her immediate supervisor or delegate.

    • Other assigned duties, which are, or become relevant to the general day-to-day operation, consistent with the duties and activities normally considered part of the Control and Instrumentation Technician area of responsibility.

    Schedule Work HoursMonday to Friday; days Qualifications


    • A demonstrated knowledge and understanding of pneumatics, thermodynamics, electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and electronic systems and controls. Experience in Johnson Controls Metasys an asset.

    • Must hold and maintain a current Province of Ontario Trades Certificate of Qualification as a 447A. (consideration will be given to certification of qualification as 309A or a 442A if no 447A candidates apply.)

    • Minimum of five years experience as a qualified tradesperson.

    • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English.

    • Demonstrated ability to work independently, think analytically, and with minimal supervision.

    • Must be able to use the tools and equipment of the trade.

    • Experience in Microsoft Office

    • Experience in Microsoft Visio an asset

    • Must be able to bend, crawl, lift heavy items, climb and work from ladders and scaffolds.
