    Garage Mechanic


    Position Status: Full-Time Regular
    Department: Human Resources and Corporate Services
    Employee Group: GVRDEU
    Location: Lake City Operations Centre, Burnaby
    Hours of Work: 40 hours / 5 days per week (Day Shift 7:00am – 3:30pm)
    Salary Range/ Wage Rate: $3,830.40 bi-weekly plus 6.25% deferred compensation

    Our Human Resources and Corporate Services Department is seeking a Garage Mechanic who will join our Mechanical Maintenance Team at Lake City Operations Centre in Burnaby.

    You are: A self-starting individual with good mechanical aptitude, skills and ability, can work with minimal supervision, are able to work in various work environments such as Metro Vancouver Parks; Water Treatment Plants; Construction sites etc., are able to work in various work environments such as confined spaces, focused on good communication and collaborative teamwork.

    This role: (The duties described hereunder are intended to be representative of the position and are not to be considered all inclusive.)

  • Maintains, repairs and overhauls equipment such as all types of road vehicles, including fire trucks, wildland fire suppression vehicles, fire initial attack vehicles, emergency transport vehicles, diesel/gas engines, trailers, commercial trucks, road maintenance equipment, construction equipment, pumps, generator sets, small engine equipment, off road vehicles, marine equipment, transmissions, turbo chargers, positive displacement blowers, air brakes, vehicle mounted cranes, etc.
  • Services and maintains all internal combustion engines and keeps engine maintenance records.
  • With direction from the Garage Foreman, investigates, troubleshoots, and takes remedial action on problems reported by Operators.
  • Be able to use up to date Automotive and Heavy Duty diagnostic equipment.
  • Must be able to assess vehicle collision damage and recommend corrective action.
  • Maintains records of completed jobs and shares expertise with Operators on serviced equipment.
  • Installs and aligns machinery and equipment to specified tolerances.
  • Trains and directs junior Mechanics in maintenance procedures.
  • Maintains technical currency related to the trade.
  • Inventories materials and parts as required for various types of repairs.
  • May be called upon to act for Garage foreman as required.
  • Works in compliance with all MVRD safety policies, procedures and WorkSafe BC regulations.
    To be successful, you have:
  • Grade 12 (or equivalent), plus appropriate Trades Qualification certificate (Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic or Commercial Transport Mechanic).
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience and responsibility in the Heavy Duty, Automotive or Commercial Transport maintenance field involved in the repair, maintenance and overhaul of equipment.
  • Must possess an authorized Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate (CVIC) or must be able to obtain the CVIC within the first 6 months of being in the position. *
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of automotive vehicle repairs and diagnostics.
  • Working knowledge of marine equipment installation and repair procedures an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of the operation and repair of large pumps, diesels, dual fuel engines and their installation.
  • Proficient in use of hand tools, power tools, shop tools, bench grinders, lathes, torque wrenches and gas cutting torches and have the ability to interpret technical reference manuals.
  • Demonstrated initiative and proven ability to work with minimal supervision and able to decide on best work methods to be used.
  • Ability to comprehend complex operations and theories, requiring analytical skills.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be computer literate and able to use applications such as Word and Excel, including an ability to understand and apply Computerized Managed Maintenance Systems and predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Considerable knowledge of the MVRD's safety policies, procedures and WorkSafe BC regulations.
  • Must participate in and develop Safe Work Procedures.
  • Must possess reliable set of hand tools.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
  • Ability to work shift work as required.
  • Valid BC driver's license.
    Must possess a Class 3 (with air) endorsement or be able to obtain a Class 3 (with air) endorsement within the first 6 months of being in the position. *

    *An extension to the six (6) month requirement will be granted where the employee cannot attend the training/exam for the certification/license due to extraordinary circumstances.
