The Position:


Responsibilities:


A


Legal Counsel:


  • Responsible for providing legal and strategic advice and guidance on a broad range of complex legal and risk issues to many diverse stakeholders, including Student Life, External Relations, Public Relations, Corporate Governance, and Human Resources
  • Collaborate with senior administrators to develop policy, process, and education for Redeemer University employees about assessing risk and requesting legal advice and oversee the implementation of such policies and processes
  • Assist President in developing governance policies and provide legal advice and guidance related to governance, risk and legal issues to the Board of Governors
  • Oversee all formal legal proceedings involving the university, including but not limited to engagement with legal representatives, litigation, negotiations, and oversight of thirdparty legal representatives litigating on Redeemer's behalf
  • Serve as Privacy Officer

B.

Leadership of Special and/or Large-Scale Institutional Projects:


  • Responsible for leading the University's engagement with significant strategic projects that fall outside regular operational strategic initiatives
  • Identify and evaluate new opportunities for growth, expansion, and innovation in academic programs, research initiatives, partnerships, and revenue generation
  • Assess potential risks and challenges to the University's strategic objectives and develop contingency plans to mitigate risks
  • Communicate the University's strategic priorities and progress to stakeholders through reports, presentations, and other communication channels
  • Lead a strategic advisory group of external stakeholders that meets annually to advise President and senior leadership on strategy, direction, and operations of the university

Oversight and Leading of Strategic Planning:


  • Responsible for leading the University's strategic planning activities
  • Leads quantitative and qualitative analysis of strategic initiatives in partnership with cross divisional stakeholders
  • Responsible for integration, collaboration and communication across various divisions and departments to ensure a cohesive implementation of initiatives and activities of the strategic plan

Formal Institutional Communication:


  • Works closely with AVP, Marketing and Communications, and the President to help lead mass audience communication, internal mass communications, media communications, public relations statements and all other forms of institutional communications, particularly those related to legal matters

Preferred Skills and Attributes:


  • Minimum of 5 years in senior leadership and strategic management in a large organization, including familiarity with serving as inhouse legal counsel, leading strategic projects, and implementing strategic initiatives;
    10 years of experience is preferred:
  • Experience in managing legal claims, negotiations, affidavits, correspondence, and litigation
  • Working knowledge of strategic and project planning tools, communication tools, budgets, data reporting, and general business systems and operations
  • High level of emotional intelligence, influencing skills, and communication skills to enable collaboration with a variety of key stakeholders including senior executive stakeholders
  • Strong business and budget acumen, including strong problemsolving skills, data analysis, critical thinking, business analysis and organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Track record in building crossfunctional relationships with ability to influence others across different levels within the organization
  • Proficient "storyteller" with demonstrated ability to build strategic narratives and impactful executivelevel presentations
  • Strong facilitation, analytical and presentation skills with a proven track record in breaking down complex, ambiguous business problems into structured approaches and actions
  • Flexible and highly resilient to change and ambiguity
  • Entrepreneurial, selfstarter and results driven with ability to work independently with limited information

Education, Training & Certifications:


  • An undergraduate degree plus a law degree (LLB or JD), from an accredited Canadian university; and, a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario

Other Requirements:


  • A solid understanding of the Reformed Christian worldview and perspective and ability to articulate Redeemer's identity and mission in a way that resonates with both Reformed and nonReformed communities
