    The Integrated Movement Disorders Program (IMDP) was founded in 2019 as a collaboration between the Toronto Western Hospital Movement Disorders Clinic and Toronto Rehab. We are an interdisciplinary team composed of a neurologist, psychiatrist, physiotherapist, psychotherapist, and education/communications lead and our goal is to create new therapies that combine physical and mental health in real time. We provide integrated rehabilitation and skills building for patients with chronic neurological illness so that they can maximize their potential and have improved function and quality of life.

    We are looking for an experienced Physiotherapist to provide clinical care for patients with movement disorders, including Parkinson's disease and Functional Movement Disorders. The individual must have experience in the physical therapy of chronic neurological disease, and ideally have had some exposure to Parkinson's disease and Functional disorders. Given that our aim is to develop new, integrated models of care, creativity, flexibility of approach, and willingness to change are essential skills for this position. We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative individual with outstanding collaborative skills and an interest in developing new methods of patient-centered care.

    Duties

  • Provide clinical care for time-limited rehabilitation programs for Parkinson's disease and Functional movement disorder
  • Provide assessment and recommendations for patients with movement disorders
  • Participate in group exercise sessions in person and virtually
  • Collect some baseline and post-treatment outcome measures
  • Provide physical intervention directed at enhancing function that crosses disease boundaries ( is disease-informed but not disease-specific)
  • Implement the current guidelines on the physical therapy of functional motor disorders, and develop new approaches
  • Work closely with the neurologist, neuropsychiatrist and psychotherapist in the clinic to develop individualized, patient-centered therapeutic plans
  • Strong patient education role; provide some written articles/resources for our quarterly newsletter "Connect"
  • Qualifications

  • Master's Degree and 2 years related experience, or Bachelor's degree with 5 years' experience
  • Experience in managing patients with complex disability (example chronic pain or neurological disability) with overlapping mental health issues is an asset
  • Experience coordinating with an interdisciplinary health care team in a multi-site academic health care setting is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and creative problem-solving skills
  • Interest in producing written patient educational materials is an asset
  • Openness to integrating cognitive-behavioral-therapy-like strategies, mindfulness, and/or relaxation techniques into the therapeutic approach an asset
  • Openness to participating in research an asset
