Instrumentation & Control Technician

Role Accountabilities:


  • To diagnose, repair and maintain, instrumentation, process control systems, combustion systems and flame safety systems.
  • Work with primary sensors, control valves, analyzers, and microprocessorbased controls found in the various Dofasco processes.
  • Use precision testing tools for flow control, fluid mechanics, temperature measurement, pressure measurement, PH, conductivity, concentration, analyzers, data acquisition, lasers, vibration monitoring.
  • Read, interpret, and revise mechanical, electrical and instrumentation drawings to company standards.
  • Install, maintain, and trouble shoot and repair pneumatic, electrical, and electronic, hydraulic controls.
  • Work with Combustion systems to ensure compliance with the government regulations.
  • Install, maintain and trouble shoot computerbased control systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers or Distributed Control Systems to specifications.
  • Perform atmospheric testing and maintain test equipment

Education and Experience:

  • 447A Instrumentation and Control Technician Certificate of Qualification is required and/or 442A Industrial Electrician Certificate of Qualification with a passion for instrumentation and control Minimum high school diploma/GED Experience in an Industrial Maintenance role is an asset.

Knowledge & Skills:


  • Advanced troubleshooting and problemsolving skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Basic personal computer skills (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Capable of physically demanding work (both indoors and outdoors)
  • Selfstarter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment with mínimal supervision.
  • Programming and troubleshooting experience with Delta V Control Systems is an asset

Hours of Work:


  • The hours of work are 10.5hour days (6AM 4:30PM), Monday to Thursday
  • Occasional overtime may be required.

Work Environment:


  • Exposure to noise, heights, confined spaces, lighting conditions, materials, products and byproducts associated with the manufacture of steel, temperature and weather extremes that require the use of specialized protective devices or equipment.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment.
  • The use of respirators, fresh air breathing apparatus and standard plant safety equipment may also be required.
  • Required to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding to access elevations, able to crouch for periods of time, push, pull, lift and turn while carrying tools, material and equipment in various parts of the facilities.
