Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC) is a diverse, dynamic, multiservice Indigenous health and wellness agency. SOAHAC serves Indigenous individuals, including those on and off reserve, status, non-status, Inuit, and Metis in the Southwest, Waterloo Wellington, and Erie St Clair regions. The organization is committed to providing accessible, high-quality, culturally appropriate health services, and strives to enhance healthcare capabilities within Indigenous communities. We are currently looking for a Child and Youth Worker to join our team at the Owen Sound site.

Reporting to the Integrated Care Manager in Owen Sound, the Child and Youth Worker is responsible for supporting the social development of young community members up to eighteen (18) years old through effective assessment, service planning, and ongoing case management.

This role entails collaborating with the surrounding Indigenous communities as well as First Nations, Inuit, and/or Métis populations in the Grey Bruce region.Requirements:

  • Postsecondary education in Child and Youth Counselling or a relevant combination of education and experience in a related healthcare discipline
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct experience working with Indigenous youth and families in a counseling or social development setting
  • Experience in community-based settings with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis (FNIM) people
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Organizational and independent work abilities
  • Proficiency in written and oral communication
  • Experience working with cultural teachers, Traditional Healers, Elders, or knowledge keepers would be beneficial
  • Knowledge of FNIM Traditional Teachings, Culture, Values, and History
  • Current satisfactory police check required
  • Computer proficiency and willingness to learn cultural safety and ongoing cultural teachings
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and willingness to travel extensively within Grey/Bruce counties
  • Up-to-date immunizations

Responsibilities:
  • Navigating and coordinating care within mainstream environments
  • Supporting youth and families in crisis with appropriate assistance
  • Referring clients to various community agencies
  • Developing culturally and age-appropriate group programs
  • Facilitating and evaluating group programs
  • Advocating for children and youth with schools, physicians, or other agencies as needed
  • Conducting initial assessments for assigned clients
  • Documenting client progress and program plans
  • Participating in case management meetings
